5GIC is the world's first centre for research into standards and solutions for 5G, which will underpin the future of mobile technology, and has received more than £50million[1] to conduct research into the development of advanced technologies for a 5G network of the future. Together, 150 researchers from partner organisations, and 100 PhD students will establish a world-leading position in mobile broadband communications and internet innovations.

Chemring Technology Solutions' first project will be to develop new technologies based upon its SmartSwitch solution and the University of Surrey's phone location and context technology.

Professor Rahim Tafazolli, Head of the University of Surrey's Centre for Communication Systems Research and 5GIC, said: "Our vision is to provide a mobile communications service that creates the perception of 'infinite capacity' for the end user. By making 5G technologies a reality, this team can take the UK to the forefront of global future telecoms technology development."

[1] The consortium partners have pledged time, expertise and other contributions which together total more than £30 million.
