Aricent Develops High Efficiency Video Codecs by Leveraging ARM Mali GPU Compute Technology

Aricent's High Efficiency Video Codecs (HEVC) helps silicon vendors quickly build 4K Ultra HD video solutions that consume considerably less power and bandwidth.

Redwood City, CA and Barcelona MWC 2014, 24 Feb 2014: Aricent, a premier engineering services and software company, today announced that it is leveraging ARM® Mali™ Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and parallel computing technology to develop HEVC (H.265) codecs that consume less power and bandwidth whilst delivering an Ultra HD video experience to users.

"ARM welcomes the progress made by Aricent in leveraging the GPU Compute capabilities of the ARM Mali family to optimize their video codecs," said Nizar Romdhane, director of ecosystem, media processing group, ARM. "The Aricent HEVC implementation illustrates the superior performance and energy efficiency achievable through software and hardware optimization of ARM Mali and ARM Cortex®-A processor technologies."

While HEVC (H.265) provides better quality, it also poses challenges in coming up with equally efficient platforms that can cater to the computational needs of such a complex video coding algorithm. More intensive computation leads to more power consumption, which impacts the user experience. By leveraging the great computational capabilities of the ARM Mali-T600 GPU implementation, Aricent has been able to offload a significant portion of the CPU load to the GPU, and this enables a significant reduction in power consumption during HEVC computation.

"ARM continuously strives to deliver high performance platforms that consume less power while meeting the ever increasing computational needs of modern multimedia solutions. Our HEVC solution leverages ARM Mali GPU Compute in concert with NEON optimizations on the ARM Cortex-A multi-core CPU to make Ultra HD video content streaming a reality," said Giri KK Vice President of Engineering at Aricent.

"Aricent's HEVC solution allows semiconductor companies to quickly integrate this next generation codec in their power optimized reference designs for multiple segments such as mobile devices, consumer electronics, and automotive," Giri added.

Aricent's HEVC solution can be easily integrated with multi-screen adaptive streaming engines such as HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) or MPEG-DASH (Moving Picture Expert Group-Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) to support streaming of Ultra HD content. This is most suitable for content providers because with such a solution they can provide an unprecedented user experience by combining ability of HEVC to encode the Ultra HD content with a very high compression ratio at low bandwidth, with adaptive streaming.

Puppet Labs is pleased to share the findings from our 2015 State of DevOps Survey. We have deepened our understanding of how DevOps enables IT performance and organizational performance, based on responses from more than 20,000 technical professionals we’ve surveyed over the past four years. The 2015 State of DevOps Report reveals high-performing IT organizations deploy 30x more frequently with 200x shorter lead times. They have 60x fewer failures and recover 168x faster
Containers are not new, but renewed commitments to performance, flexibility, and agility have propelled them to the top of the agenda today. By working without the need for virtualization and its overhead, containers are seen as the perfect way to deploy apps and services across multiple clouds. Containers can handle anything from file types to operating systems and services, including microservices. What are microservices? Unlike what the name implies, microservices are not necessarily small,...
Moving an existing on-premise infrastructure into the cloud can be a complex and daunting proposition. It is critical to understand the benefits as well as the challenges associated with either a full or hybrid approach. In his session at 17th Cloud Expo, Richard Weiss, Principal Consultant at Pythian, will present a roadmap that can be leveraged by any organization to plan, analyze, evaluate and execute on a cloud migration solution. He will review the five major cloud transformation phases a...
ElasticBox, the agile application delivery manager, announced freely available public boxes for the DevOps community. ElasticBox works with enterprises to help them deploy any application to any cloud. Public boxes are curated reference boxes that represent some of the most popular applications and tools for orchestrating deployments at scale. Contrary to mainstream media attention, the multiple possibilities of how consumer IoT will transform our everyday lives aren’t the only angle of this headline-gaining trend. There’s a huge opportunity for “industrial IoT” and “Smart Cities” to impact the world in the same capacity – especially during critical situations. For example, a community water dam that needs to release water can leverage embedded critical communications logic to alert the appropriate individuals, on the right device, as...
Amazon and Google have built software-defined data centers (SDDCs) that deliver massively scalable services with great efficiency. Yet, building SDDCs has proven to be a near impossibility for ‘normal’ companies without hyper-scale resources. In his session at 17th Cloud Expo, David Cauthron, founder and chief executive officer of Nimboxx, will discuss the evolution of virtualization (hardware, application, memory, storage) and how commodity / open source hyper converged infrastructure (HCI) so...
