AppliedMicro, ASSET Collaborate on Debugging Tools to Accelerate Development of Cloud Applications Based on AppliedMicro’s X-Gene™ Server on a Chip™ Solution

ASSET® InterTech and Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (NASDAQ: AMCC), also known as AppliedMicro®, have collaborated on enabling ASSET’s software debug tools for AppliedMicro’s X-Gene™ Server on a ChipTM silicon solution, which is being rapidly deployed in enterprise systems in the cloud. ASSET (www.asset-intertech.com), through its ScanWorks® platform for embedded instruments, is the leading supplier of tools for embedded instrumentation.

X-Gene incorporates custom 64-bit ARMv8 processor cores to support a wide range of enterprise cloud applications such as web servers, data analytics, media streaming and others. The scalable multicore X-Gene SoC is a fully integrated server-on-a-chip solution with enterprise-class ARM cores, memory and input/output (I/O), including 10Gbps Ethernet, on the same chip, delivering industry-standard performance with a much lower cost of ownership.

“Without the right tools and significant visibility into concurrent code execution, debugging firmware for complex multicore SoCs is more than challenging,” said Larry Osborn, ASSET product manager for software debug and trace tools. “Because of the dependencies among multiple and concurrent firmware threads, isolating the root causes of bugs requires advanced debug and trace tools that will take into account all of the processing that’s going on in the system.”

The ASSET SourcePoint™ hardware-assisted debugger, which came to ASSET with its recent acquisition of Arium™, gives developers visibility into code execution from the point where the system is reset through the execution of the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI). SourcePoint also runs under the Linux operating system and can take advantage of its many capabilities.

To serve a wide range of development needs, two ASSET run-control probes support the SourcePoint ARM debugger. The LC-500S and LX-1000 access ARM code executing on X-Gene processors via the chip’s JTAG port and apply many of the device’s internal resources to debug code. The LX-1000 Trace Port Analyzer includes the added capability over the LC-500S of storing collected trace data in two gigabytes of external storage.

“Developers of cloud applications based on the X-Gene are intent on bringing their systems to market as quickly as possible. Enterprise systems are rapidly moving to the cloud,” said Ed Gasiorowski, director of platform engineering at AppliedMicro. “With ASSET’s tools joining the ecosystem, our users will have powerful debug and trace tools that complement the processing capabilities of X-Gene.”

Pricing and Availability

The SourcePoint debugger for designs based on X-Gene processors is available now from ASSET InterTech and its distributors. Pricing for SourcePoint with an LC-500S run-control probe starts at $2,950. About ASSET InterTech

ASSET InterTech is a leading supplier to the electronics industry of tools based on embedded instrumentation. Its SourcePoint debugger and the ScanWorks platform for embedded instruments overcome the limitations of external test and measurement equipment by applying instrumentation embedded in code and semiconductors to debug and validate software and firmware, and to perform design validation and manufacturing test on chips and circuit boards. ASSET’s recent acquisition of Arium (www.arium.com) added a powerful suite of firmware debug and trace tools to the ScanWorks platform. Designers can quickly debug firmware and then diagnose how it interacts with hardware. ASSET InterTech is located at 2201 North Central Expressway, Suite 105, Richardson, TX 75080.

A strange thing is happening along the way to the Internet of Things, namely far too many devices to work with and manage. It has become clear that we'll need much higher efficiency user experiences that can allow us to more easily and scalably work with the thousands of devices that will soon be in each of our lives. Data is an unusual currency; it is not restricted by the same transactional limitations as money or people. In fact, the more that you leverage your data across multiple business use cases, the more valuable it becomes to the organization. And the same can be said about the organization’s analytics. We’ve been doing it for years, decades for some. How many websites have you created accounts on? Your bank, your credit card companies, social media sites, hotels and travel sites, online shopping sites, and that’s just the start. We do it often without even thinking about it, quickly entering our personal information, our data, in a plethora of systems. Sometimes we’re not even aware of the information we are providing. It could be very personal information (think of the security questions you ...

In this strange new world where more and more power is drawn from business technology, companies are effectively straddling two paths on the road to innovation and transformation into digital enterprises. The first path is the heritage trail – with “legacy” technology forming the background. Here, extant technologies are transformed by core IT teams to provide more API-driven approaches. Legacy systems can restrict companies that are transitioning into digital enterprises. To truly become a lea...
According to Forrester Research, every business will become either a digital predator or digital prey by 2020. To avoid demise, organizations must rapidly create new sources of value in their end-to-end customer experiences. True digital predators also must break down information and process silos and extend digital transformation initiatives to empower employees with the digital resources needed to win, serve, and retain customers.
