SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 02/27/14 -- Weather Underground, the world's first online weather service has announced the release of Radius, a new app for iPhone and iPod touch. Users can set a designated radius from a desired location to receive free push notifications of NWS severe alerts, lightning and precipitation heading into that area.
Once alerted to weather events within their selected radius, users can customize the reported conditions within the data bubbles displayed on their home screen. Short-term forecasts at hourly or 15-minute intervals are a tap away and when precipitation is nearby, the predictive radar tool can be used to determine precisely when to take cover. Weather Underground's unrivaled network of personal weather stations (owned by more than 21,000 individuals across the U.S.) provides up-to-the minute weather information. Users have the ability to access live data from reporting stations in their area, as well as images from over 12,000 webcams.
"With thousands of weather apps available to smartphone users, we set out to build a completely new way for people to receive hyper-local weather information," said Jim Menard, General Manager of Weather Underground. "Radius ensures that its users are the first to know about severe weather in their area, while also delivering an interactive experience that only Weather Underground's community-sourced data can provide."
Users wishing to contribute content have the opportunity to take and share photos of current weather conditions in their area. "Even when there isn't severe weather, Radius provides an engaging experience for users to browse photos and webcam images from within their community," added Menard.
The Radius App is available for free from the App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or in the iTunes Store.
