March is PET Poison Prevention Month

RALEIGH, N.C., Feb. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Did you know that CHOCOLATE is the number one reason owners call the pet poison hotline?

It makes sense. Dogs and cats love the creamy, tasty goodness as much as we do, however, it could be deadly.

"Chocolate is one of the most common toxins we see in the emergency room," says Dr. Rob Proietto, MS, VMD.  "In some cases of toxin ingestion (like rat poison) these animals need emergency treatment and are often hospitalized which can be upwards of three to five thousand dollars."

Chocolate is so common for our furry friends that 20% of all ingestion claims PetPartners insurance receives has to do with the candy…and the average claim is more than $530.

Chocolate tops the list, but there are plenty of other dangerous items which pets have swallowed this past year.
