ITRI and Open Compute Project Foundation Celebrate Opening of Open Compute Project (OCP) Global Certification Testing Center

Center Conducts First Global Certification

TAIPEI, TAIWAN -- (Marketwired) -- 03/04/14 -- ITRI (Industrial Technology Research Institute), Taiwan's largest and one of the world's leading high-tech R&D institutions, and the Open Compute Project (OCP) Foundation, celebrated the opening of the ITRI OCP Global Certification Testing Center at the OCP Taiwan Forum on March 4th. The new center will provide global validation service in support of OCP Foundation's vision for open sourced hardware.

The ITRI OCP Certification Testing Center offers a unique combination of technology know-how, non-profit status, and geographic proximity to key vendors in support of the OCP ecosystem worldwide and has already conducted OCP's first global certification. Being a trusted and knowledgeable partner to both OCP buyers and OCP vendors worldwide, the new center is a key anchor in promoting the adoption of OCP solutions. A leading contributor and primary maintainer of OCP Certification Packages, this center will be actively engaged in both technical and policy setting processes within the OCP Compliance and Interoperability (C&I) Community.

"We continue to see companies in Taiwan play an important role in this growing ecosystem," said Dr. Jyuo-Min Shyu, ITRI President. "With the opportunity to buy certified products, the total available market for OCP products will grow significantly. ITRI is proud to provide such a critical service through the new ITRI OCP Certification Testing Center."

"As a non-profit R&D organization with deep technical expertise and geographic proximity to vendors in Taiwan," said Dr. Tzi-Cker Chiueh, General Director of ITRI Cloud Computing Center for Mobile Application, "ITRI looks forward to greater collaboration and providing timely services with OCP users and vendors."

"As data centers around the world continue to adopt OCP platforms, OCP certification labs play an important role by offering a qualification and testing process for open hardware solutions," said Frank Frankovsky, chair and president of the Open Compute Project. "With the first lab in Asia, ITRI will provide the technology expertise to help ensure that the quality of these custom-designed products is validated and meets the community's specifications."

"The ITRI OCP Certification Testing Center provides a significant anchor for the OCP ecosystem," said Y.F. Juan, OCP C&I Project Chair and ITRI Deputy Director. "With the establishment of OCP Certification Labs, the OCP C&I community has achieved a great milestone and embarked on a new chapter in ensuring consumer confidence in OCP designs."

"As a member of the OCP community, we look forward to collaborating with the ITRI OCP Certification Testing Center for Microsoft's OCP contributions," said Kushagra Vaid, GM Cloud Server Engineering of Microsoft. "This is an important step for Microsoft's OCP engagement."

"ITRI's laboratory with leading test and certification capabilities will further accelerate innovation and the speed at which new server technologies are brought to the market. Intel is proud that the first two products certified by the lab are based on the Intel Xeon-based server motherboard specification. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with ITRI and bringing other Intel-based designs to the market including new storage, networking and rack design technologies," said Jason Chen, Vice President of Sales and Marketing Group and Country Manager of Intel Taiwan.

"Quanta QCT was among the earliest partners in the OCP ecosystem," said Mike Yang, general manager of Quanta QCT. "We also were an early supplier of products in the first batch of certification candidates at ITRI. Today, Quanta QCT offers the most complete lineup of OCP-compliant products available, and the ITRI OCP Certification Testing Center will be an important partner in expanding our OCP strategy."

"Being the first OCP certified solution, Wiwynn has worked closely with the ITRI OCP Certification Testing Center to realize OCP's vision," said Emily Hong, President of Wiwynn. "The impact from the OCP is significant today and its influence will grow exponentially as more people see the value. We believe compliance and interoperability are a catalyst to the growth of the OCP community. Wiwynn is committed to being a continuous contributor and a major enabler to the OCP ecosystem."

A critical component of any IoT project is what to do with all the data being generated. This data needs to be captured, processed, structured, and stored in a way to facilitate different kinds of queries. Traditional data warehouse and analytical systems are mature technologies that can be used to handle certain kinds of queries, but they are not always well suited to many problems, particularly when there is a need for real-time insights.
Providing secure, mobile access to sensitive data sets is a critical element in realizing the full potential of cloud computing. However, large data caches remain inaccessible to edge devices for reasons of security, size, format or limited viewing capabilities. Medical imaging, computer aided design and seismic interpretation are just a few examples of industries facing this challenge. Rather than fighting for incremental gains by pulling these datasets to edge devices, we need to embrace the i...
Web Real-Time Communication APIs have quickly revolutionized what browsers are capable of. In addition to video and audio streams, we can now bi-directionally send arbitrary data over WebRTC's PeerConnection Data Channels. With the advent of Progressive Web Apps and new hardware APIs such as WebBluetooh and WebUSB, we can finally enable users to stitch together the Internet of Things directly from their browsers while communicating privately and securely in a decentralized way.

When you focus on a journey from up-close, you look at your own technical and cultural history and how you changed it for the benefit of the customer. This was our starting point: too many integration issues, 13 SWP days and very long cycles. It was evident that in this fast-paced industry we could no longer afford this reality. We needed something that would take us beyond reducing the development lifecycles, CI and Agile methodologies. We made a fundamental difference, even changed our culture...
