Latisys Denver Data Center Wins Prestigious Environmental Award

Recognized by Xcel Energy for Delivering Highest Level of Energy Savings -- Over 1 Million Kilowatt Hours

DENVER, CO -- (Marketwired) -- 03/05/14 -- Latisys, a leading provider of hybrid cloud hosting and data center solutions today announced it has been named winner of the 2013 Xcel Energy Recommissioning Achievement Award.

The award recognizes Latisys for achieving the highest energy savings as part of Xcel Energy's Recommissioning program for airflow improvement in Latisys' Denver (DEN1) data center. The award cites Latisys' airflow containment and energy efficiency initiatives resulting in quantified annual savings of 1,026,810 kilowatt hours -- the equivalent of 118 years of power for an average size household. Corey Needles, Latisys Senior Vice President of Data Center Operations will accept the award at the Xcel Energy Efficiency Open House held on March 5 at Coor's Field.

Xcel Energy's customers have a long history of successful energy conservation and the Efficiency Partner program recognizes customers and partners for their substantial energy efficiency efforts. Xcel's Energy Recommissioning program enables customers and partners to earn rebates and environment credits by improving the efficiency of their building systems and reducing facility operating costs.

Latisys operates a unified platform of interconnected data centers from which it delivers cloud-enabled managed hosting and IT infrastructure services. Latisys' investment in high-density data center strategies and technologies has enabled it to achieve industry-best power utilization efficiency (PUE) ratings.

Air containment, as it relates to cooling strategies, represents both a great challenge and a great opportunity in the data center. Over the last two years Latisys has focused on developing and implementing highly advanced hot and cold aisle containment solutions tuned to exacting customer requirements to further improve efficiencies and reduce operating costs.

"Latisys is already established as a leader in enterprise grade IT infrastructure and hybrid cloud solutions," said Jim Sack, CEO of Xcel Energy. "Today we are pleased to recognize them for incorporating innovative cost-containment strategies and embracing an environmentally friendly approach to IT Infrastructure as a Service."

"Latisys' data centers have always been built with the long-term view that the foundation of high-density computing has to be supported by efficient power and cooling design principles," said Pete Stevenson, CEO of Latisys. "This has enabled us to be smart about energy consumption while insuring a sustainable path for our customers as they deploy ever-changing technology within their IT roadmap. When we support high density rack environments with innovative, highly efficient cooling solutions -- backed by our high touch customer care model -- customers benefit from the knowledge that their solution can be supported well into the future."

With high-density data centers located in every U.S. time zone, Latisys' national reach enables multi-site redundancy, managed backup and secure disaster recovery including cloud-based DR solutions. Latisys' Chicago data center campus serves as the Midwest hub of Latisys' unified and compliant national platform of high-density data centers -- which includes Denver as an ideal Disaster Recovery site and Southern California and Northern Virginia as gateways to Asia Pacific, Europe and South America. More than 800 enterprises and government organizations rely on Latisys as a trusted provider of critical IT infrastructure solutions that underpin their business.

Latisys engages external audit firms to perform annual assessments to support customers' diverse compliance requirements. These accredited examinations span SOC 2, SOC 3, PCI DSS and HIPAA -- affirming Latisys' commitment to meet the highest standards for availability and security.

Enterprises have been using both Big Data and virtualization for years. Until recently, however, most enterprises have not combined the two. Big Data's demands for higher levels of performance, the ability to control quality-of-service (QoS), and the ability to adhere to SLAs have kept it on bare metal, apart from the modern data center cloud. With recent technology innovations, we've seen the advantages of bare metal erode to such a degree that the enhanced flexibility and reduced costs that cl...

As software becomes more and more complex, we, as software developers, have been splitting up our code into smaller and smaller components. This is also true for the environment in which we run our code: going from bare metal, to VMs to the modern-day Cloud Native world of containers, schedulers and microservices. While we have figured out how to run containerized applications in the cloud using schedulers, we've yet to come up with a good solution to bridge the gap between getting your conta...

How can you see the whole system when it is spread across teams and locations? How do you close feedback loops across teams and activities delivering complex multi-tier, cloud, container, serverless, and/or API-based services?
