Captivate Network Forms Exclusive Partnership with the City of Boston’s ‘Greenovate Boston’ Initiative

Captivate Network, the leading digital media company reaching on-the-go business professionals throughout their workday, has formed an exclusive partnership with the City of Boston to help local businesses better reduce and manage their carbon footprints in the office. Captivate has committed over three months of marketing support to promote Greenovate Boston via sustainability tips to help Captivate’s audience of business professionals achieve environmentally-friendly workplaces. In the current campaign, office professionals are asked to text “OFFICE” to Greenovate’s phone number (617) 945-8867 to take the pledge to take three important actions daily:

  1. Using revolving doors, which saves eight times more air that needs to be heated or cooled;
  2. Switching to double-sided printing, which can save the equivalent of one tree per employee annually; and
  3. Turning off electronics and unplugging chargers before leaving, which helps reduce electricity leaks that happen when appliances are switched off but not unplugged.

The City of Boston will follow up periodically with those that pledge to see whether they adopt those habits.

Captivate Network, a company founded in Massachusetts more than 15 years ago, has a long-standing presence in Boston’s commercial real estate industry, with more than 600 news and information screens in the city’s most prestigious class-A office buildings.

“With buildings producing more than 60% of our city's greenhouse gases, a key part of Greenovate Boston is educating our businesses and employees on how small energy-saving actions at the office can help make a greener Boston,” said Mayor of Boston Martin J. Walsh. “I want to thank Captivate Network for their support in helping us share this message.”

Captivate Network is a class A amenity and sustainability solution for commercial real estate partners across North America, who as an industry are focused on green initiatives and achieving LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. Property managers reduce paper waste by using Captivate’s screens to directly communicate with tenants, thereby eliminating the need for printed communication pieces. Captivate is also a primary tool used to promote building sustainability initiatives to tenants and drive their participation and support.

“Captivate Network’s commitment to green initiatives in the workplace make the exclusive partnership with Greenovate Boston’s in-office campaign one that is organic and effective in delivering the right message to the right audience with a highly relevant media vehicle,” said Todd Newville, Senior Vice President of Business Operations at Captivate Network.

Captivate’s commitment to the Greenovate Boston initiative extends beyond the current in-office campaign, with additional support and more carbon footprint reduction tips to come throughout 2014.

Fifty billion connected devices and still no winning protocols standards. HTTP, WebSockets, MQTT, and CoAP seem to be leading in the IoT protocol race at the moment but many more protocols are getting introduced on a regular basis. Web Real-Time Communication APIs have quickly revolutionized what browsers are capable of. In addition to video and audio streams, we can now bi-directionally send arbitrary data over WebRTC's PeerConnection Data Channels. With the advent of Progressive Web Apps and new hardware APIs such as WebBluetooh and WebUSB, we can finally enable users to stitch together the Internet of Things directly from their browsers while communicating privately and securely in a decentralized way.

Developing software for the Internet of Things (IoT) comes with its own set of challenges. Security, privacy, and unified standards are a few key issues. In addition, each IoT product is comprised of (at least) three separate application components: the software embedded in the device, the back-end service, and the mobile application for the end user’s controls. Each component is developed by a different team, using different technologies and practices, and deployed to a different stack/target –...
