Goldcorp announces record gold production; Film exposes mining exploitation

Documentary shines light on continued corporate exploitation in Guatemala

NEW YORK, March 6, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Goldcorp, the world's second largest producer of gold, recently announced "record quarterly and full-year gold production." Not mentioned in the company's filings is the continued exploitation of the people of Guatemala, the subject of the award-winning documentary film "Gold Fever," now available instantly on iTunes, Amazon, Vimeo, DVD and Blu-ray.

On February 14, Goldcorp released its 2013 financial statements announcing record gold sales of 2.6 million ounces in 2013. The company recently trumpted that its "low-cost gold production is located in safe jurisdictions in the Americas and remains 100% unhedged." Goldcorp will file its Annual Report with the SEC this month, its stockholders enjoying over 120 consecutive months of dividends. 

Community members affected by the Marlin Mine have voiced an urgent need for their story to be heard in North America. The face of a woman who lives near the mine will appear prominently on a digital billboard in New York's Times Square in opposition to the role played by the US financial sector in Guatemala—a counter-narrative to Goldcorp's filings about gold production in her country.

Winner of the Rigoberta Menchu Grand Prix in Montreal, "Gold Fever" examines the economic and political systems that reinforce the continued exploitation of the world's poor for the benefit of the super-rich. The film tells the story of the decade-long conflict set off by the construction of Goldcorp's massive Marlin Mine in the rural community of San Miguel Ixtahuacan, Guatemala.
