Ruzzle Research Reveals That 50% of UK Adults Aren’t Confident Enough to Check a 5 Year-Old’s Homework for Spelling Mistakes

MAG Interactive, makers of word game Ruzzle for phones and tablets, today announced the results of research commissioned for Brain Awareness Week (10-16 March) that reveals Brits cannot spell common words correctly and rely heavily on devices to correct their spelling. Men in particular take little pride in their spelling ability and only half of the respondents had the confidence to check a five year-old’s homework for spelling mistakes. As we enter the week long celebration of the brain, it’s also revealed that less than one in five adults feel they give their grey matter a workout every day.

At the same time, statistics from Ruzzle suggest that the game is giving players a boost that actively improves their linguistic cognition. Ruzzle is a simple, free word game for phones and tablets that challenges players to find as many words as possible from a given set of letters on a four by four grid in two minutes by sliding a finger from letter to letter. When they first start playing, players will on average find just 18 words; by the time they have played 100 rounds (less than 3 and a half hours’ playing time), players will typically find an average of 51 words, an improvement by almost a factor of three.

Countdown’s resident wordsmith Susie Dent will today appear in a series of interviews on the subject of the research and the importance of giving your brain a workout – please contact the markettiers4dc media team on 020 7253 8888/07767370556 or email [email protected] for more information or to arrange an interview.

Research highlights:

  • Half (50%) of British adults can’t successfully identify the correct spelling of definitely without the help of spellcheck, with nearly one in three (32%) wrongly believing it’s “definately”
  • People in the North East (44%) and Yorkshire (45%) are the least likely to spell definitely correctly
  • Only half (50%) of us would be confident checking a five years-old’s homework for spelling mistakes
  • Nearly two thirds (63%) of adults wouldn’t be confident checking an A-Level student’s essay for spelling mistakes
  • Women are typically much more confident than men when it comes to checking a child’s spelling; however, they are more or less as likely to spell definitely incorrectly as men (49% versus 51%)
  • Women pride themselves on their good spelling much more than men, with most (52%) saying they would be upset to discover they had spelt a word wrong on a document or message after sending it, compared with just 40% of men
  • But 96% of adults do think spelling skills are still important despite computers and smartphones correcting it for you if you’re near enough
  • 1 in 8 (13%) people think their spelling has got worse because they rely on tools like spellcheck and autocorrect so much
  • Nearly 1 in 10 (9%) of adults wouldn’t be confident writing a handwritten letter without a device for checking spelling
  • Only 1 in 5 (20%) people think their brain gets a workout every day

The research for Ruzzle was carried out online by Opinion Matters between 21/02/2014 and 24/02/2014 amongst a panel resulting in 2,048 UK adult respondents. All research conducted adheres to the MRS Codes of Conduct (2010) in the UK and ICC/ESOMAR World Research Guidelines. In most cases, it is convenient to have some human interaction with a web (micro-)service, no matter how small it is. A traditional approach would be to create an HTTP interface, where user requests will be dispatched and HTML/CSS pages must be served. This approach is indeed very traditional for a web site, but not really convenient for a web service, which is not intended to be good looking, 24x7 up and running and UX-optimized. Instead, talking to a web service in a chat-bot mode would be muc...
It's easy to assume that your app will run on a fast and reliable network. The reality for your app's users, though, is often a slow, unreliable network with spotty coverage.
