LOS ANGELES, March 7, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is being released by SEIU United Service Workers West:
Airport workers around the country will remember fallen LAX baggage worker, Cesar Augusto Valenzuela on Sunday, the day of his funeral.
Cesar died on February 21st while working for Menzies Aviation at LAX. Police and CalOSHA authorities are still trying to piece together the facts, but reports say that Cesar was thrown from the baggage vehicle he was driving and struck by a cart. Menzies was recently fined $95,000 by CalOSHA for unsafe practices, including the type of safety violations that can cause serious harm or death.
As detailed in a recent UC Berkeley study, outsourcing in the airline industry is undermining what once were middle class jobs that could support a family. The trend has also led to an environment where contractors, allowed to operate with very little oversight, can ignore measures intended to keep workers and passengers safe.
On Sunday, airport workers in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Fort Lauderdale will take time to honor Cesar's life by talking to co-workers and passengers about the need for good, safe jobs in America's airports.
