Survey Finds 97 percent of Americans plan to celebrate St. Patrick's Day

SEATTLE, March 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Some might not feel so lucky that St. Patrick's Day falls on a Monday this year, but that's not stopping an overwhelming majority of Americans from celebrating their Irish roots. According to Survey Analytics, 97 percent of Americans plan to celebrate the holiday in one form or another.

Although it's not the most popular of U.S. holidays, 41 percent of Americans will be spending the night out with friends at a bar or party and 30 percent will be celebrating with family. More than 20 percent will be attending a St. Patrick's Day parade, while only 5 percent of Americans plan to celebrate with co-workers at an office party. The most well known U.S. cities for St. Patrick's Day festivities include Boston (29 percent), New York (17 percent) and Chicago (16 percent), according to the survey.

Not surprisingly, over 50 percent of Americans prefer to drink beer on St. Patrick's Day. While 19 percent choose hard liquor as their drink of choice and 9 percent prefer a combination of both. Guinness is the favorite beer to sip on St. Pat's for 35 percent of those surveyed. Assorted Budweiser brands ranked second with 26 percent, followed by Miller/Miller Light, Coors/Coors Light, Sam Adams, and Heineken. Half of Americans will partake in a festive green brew, with 49 percent of adults surveyed saying they plan to drink green beer, but only on St. Patrick's Day.

Spending on St. Patrick's Day festivities is expected to reach $4.8 billion, in line with last year's numbers, according to the National Retail Federation. The average person will spend $35, increasing traffic for grocery stores, restaurants/bars and retails stores selling green apparel.

The 2014 St. Patrick's Day Survey represents data from more than 2,000 respondents in 56 states including California, Florida, New York and Texas. Consumers took the survey online via desktops/laptops, smartphones and tablets. Respondents were 50 percent female and 50 percent male. One third of the population surveyed said they will attempt an Irish accent on March 17.
