St. Thomas University A Leader In Catholic Social Teaching

Two Soon-To-Be Saints In Postmodern Civilization

MIAMI, March 13, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Two wise and holy figures are still making history in 2014 and into future years as the world awaits the canonization of Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II. Recognized by many as the leading Catholic university in the Southeast, Miami's St. Thomas University (www.stu.edu) is presenting its 2014 Lecture Series on Catholic Social Teaching, with two lectures that will provide thorough, scholastic analysis on the two historical figures. The two lectures are sponsored by Biscayne College's Center for Ethics and the Pax Romana Movement. The first Lecture, The Social Teaching of Saint John XXIII, will take place Tuesday, April 1 from 3:30 to 5:00 pm. The general public is invited to join academics and Catholic scholars to learn about the life and teaching of a radical-traditional prophet seeking a renewed world church in service of a humanistic global civilization. The lecture will pay special attention to his encyclicals MATER ET MAGISTRA and PACEM IN TERRIS.

Lecture Two -The Social Teaching of Saint John Paul II- will take place Tuesday, April 8,  also from 3:30 to 5:00 PM. This second gathering will focus on the life and teaching of another radical-traditional prophet seeking a global culture of life in response to the modern western crisis of truth and culture of death. His encyclicals LABOREM EXERCENS and FIDES ET RATIO will also be discussed. Both lectures will be held on campus, at the Chapel of Saint Anthony, 16401 NW 37th Avenue in Miami Gardens.

The scholar behind the lecture series, Joe Holland, PH. D., is Professor of Philosophy and Religion at St. Thomas University and Adjunct Professor in its School of Law. He is also President of Pax Romana Catholic Movement for Intellectual & Cultural Affairs USA; co-founder and Vice-Chair of Catholic Scholars for Worker Justice; and a member of the International Association for Catholic Social Thought, based at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium. He is also author of 15 books and many articles.

Dr. Holland analyzed the modern "national Leonine" strategy (re: Pope Leo XIII) in his earlier book, Modern Catholic Social Teaching: the Popes Confront the Industrial Age 1740-1958 (Paulist Press, 2003). His new book, The Prophetic Vision of John XXIII: Radical-Traditional Founder of Postmodern Catholic Social Teaching (Pacem in Terris Press, 2014) analyzes John as founder of the postmodern global "Johannine" strategy of Catholic Social Teaching. In a sequel book, he will analyze John Paul's equally important and complementary contributions to this postmodern global strategy.

"This type of intellectual thought and scholarly analysis embodies the values and traditions of the Archdiocesan university," said President Monsignor Franklyn M. Casale. "Biscayne College, home to the liberal arts and social sciences, continues to graduate students who become intellectual leaders who contribute to broadening an understanding of the peoples of the world."
