ALEXANDRIA, VA--(Marketwired - March 14, 2014) - March is National Peanut Month and Georgia, the United States' number one peanut producing state, is celebrating the crop all month long.
As part of the annual PB&J Day, the Georgia Peanut Commission and Peanut Proud, a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization of the U.S. peanut industry, will host a press conference at 10:30 am on Monday, March 17 at the Georgia State Capitol. They plan to highlight their recent donation of 18,720 jars of peanut butter, a retail value of $56,160, to the Atlanta Community Food Bank. All peanut butter donated is made from quality Georgia grown peanuts and processed at Tara Foods in Albany, GA.
"Peanuts are Georgia's Official State Crop and the state boasts the largest share of peanut production in the U.S. at nearly 50 percent," says Armond Morris, chairman of the Georgia Peanut Commission. "Georgia's 3,500 peanut farmers contribute approximately $2 billion annually to the state and local economy."

Peanut Butter for the Hungry is an initiative of the U.S. peanut industry to help severely malnourished children around the world. This initiative, which is administered by the American Peanut Council, supports the manufacture and use of ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF), a simple but effective mixture of peanut paste, powdered milk, vitamins and minerals, in addition to the donation of shelf stable peanut butter to food banks throughout the United States. Peanuts are naturally cholesterol-free and are a good source of protein, vitamin E, niacin, folate, phosphorus and magnesium.
