Minister Shea Announces That Canadian Seafood Exports Continued to Grow in 2013

2013 data greatly encouraging, pointing to biggest yearly increase in three years.

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS -- (Marketwired) -- 03/16/14 -- The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today released the 2013 trade figures for Canada's exports of fish and seafood products. Once again, Canada's seafood exports continued an upward trend, with an overall increase of $268 million or 6.5 percent over the previous year, with total sales reaching $4.42 billion.

Canada's biggest seafood export increase overall was to the U.S., which saw an 8 percent ($217 million) increase over the previous year, followed closely by the European Union with an 8.3 percent ($28.6 million) export growth. Canada and the European Union last year agreed on the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, which has been widely welcomed as a major boon for the industry.

The Government of Canada also announced on March 11, that Canada and the Republic of Korea have concluded negotiations for a Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement. The agreement will significantly boost trade between the two countries, eliminating all South Korea's average tariff of 16.5 per cent in this sector, which includes tariff peaks as high as 47 per cent, on fish and seafood products.

Minister Shea is currently leading the Canadian delegation at North America's largest seafood trade event, Seafood Expo North America on March 16 to 18, where she promoted Canada's role in ensuring very well regulated and sustainable seafood.

PROVINCIAL AND TERRITORIAL STATISTICS ON CANADA'S FISH AND SEAFOOD EXPORTS IN 2013

Fish and seafood are among the largest single food commodities exported by Canada. In 2013, Canada exported $4.4 billion of fish and seafood products, an increase of $268 million from 2012. Approximately 85 percent of all fish landed by Canadian harvesters are exported to foreign markets.

International trade figures show that 63 percent of Canadian fish and seafood exports were destined for the United States at a value of $2.8 billion. The People's Republic of China and the European Union were important export markets in 2013, accounting for $454 million and $372 million worth of exports respectively. These two markets accounted for 19 percent of total Canadian fish and seafood exports worldwide.

The Government of Canada also announced on March 11, that Canada and the Republic of Korea have concluded negotiations for a Canada- Korea Free Trade Agreement. The agreement will eliminate all Korean tariffs on fish and seafood products and create jobs and opportunity for Canadians. In 2013, Canada exported $48 million of fish and seafood to South Korea.

Canada's largest exports by species were lobster, snow/queen crab, farmed Atlantic salmon and shrimp. In 2013, these species represented 62 percent ($2.7 billion) of the total value and 47 percent (281 thousand tonnes) of the total volume of fish and seafood exports. Lobster remains Canada's top export species in terms of value, with $1.2 billion of exports in 2013.

In 2013, provincially, the largest exporter of fish and seafood products was Nova Scotia, followed by New Brunswick, British Columbia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec and Prince Edward Island.

Nova Scotia


--  Canada's largest exporter of fish and seafood, with exports valued at
    $1.1 billion.
--  Exported 121,802 tonnes (t) of fish and seafood.
--  Top three exports by value were lobster (30,047 t valued at $449.6
    million), scallop (5,464 t valued at $132.0 million), and snow/queen
    crab (9,706 t valued at $112.4 million).

New Brunswick


--  Canada's second largest exporter of fish and seafood, with exports
    valued at $1.0 billion.
--  Exported 98,777 tonnes (t) of fish and seafood.
--  Top three exports by value were lobster (22,473 t valued at $493.4
    million), farmed Atlantic salmon (29,240 t valued at $228.5 million) and
    snow/queen crab (9,701 t valued at $108.2 million).

British Columbia


--  Canada's third largest exporter of fish and seafood, with exports valued
    at $903.7 million.
--  Exported 159,395 tonnes of fish and seafood.
--  Top three exports by value were farmed Atlantic salmon (38,804 t valued
    at $266.0 million), crab (6,178 t valued at $90.8 million) and hake
    (31,692 t valued at $61.5 million).

Newfoundland and Labrador


--  Canada's fourth largest exporter of fish and seafood, with exports
    valued at $827.3 million in 2013.
--  Exported 144,208 tonnes of fish and seafood.
--  Top three exports by value were snow/queen crab (26,111 t valued at
    $292.8 million), shrimp (56,778 t valued at $252.5 million) and
    Greenland turbot (8,484 t valued at $50.7 million).

Quebec


--  Canada's fifth largest exporter of fish and seafood, with exports valued
    at $237.7 million in 2013.
--  Exported 23,219 tonnes of fish and seafood.
--  Top three exports by value were snow/queen crab (9,158 t valued at
    $100.2 million), lobster (2,528 t valued at $55.2 million) and shrimp
    (1,185 t valued at $12.0 million).

Prince Edward Island


--  Canada's sixth largest exporter of fish and seafood, with exports valued
    at $205.2 million.
--  Exported 23,440 tonnes of fish and seafood.
--  Top three exports by value were lobster (7,327 t valued at $144.2
    million), farmed mussel (13,030 t valued at $38.4 million) and oyster
    (961 t valued at $5.9 million).

Ontario


--  Canada's seventh largest exporter of fish and seafood, with exports
    valued at $101.2 million.
--  Exported approximately 15,833 tonnes of fish and seafood.
--  Top three exports by value were pickerel (1,241 t valued at $14.7
    million), lobster (928 t valued at $14.2 million) and whitefish (2,358 t
    valued at $13.1 million).

Manitoba


--  Canada's eighth largest exporter of fish and seafood, with exports
    valued at $56.3 million.
--  Exported approximately 6,695 tonnes of fish and seafood.
--  Top three exports by value were perch (1,704 t valued at $29.9 million),
    whitefish (1,876 t valued at $9.6 million) and pickerel (142 t valued at
    $1.5 million).

Alberta


--  Canada's ninth largest exporter of fish and seafood, with exports valued
    at $7.3 million.
--  Exported approximately 132 tonnes of fish and seafood.
--  Top three exports by value were oyster (11 t valued at $95,788), shrimp
    (18 t valued at $56,525) and sea urchin (1 t valued at $49,200).

Saskatchewan


--  Canada's tenth largest exporter of fish and seafood, with exports valued
    at $5.3 million.
--  Exported approximately 669 tonnes of fish and seafood.
--  Top three exports by value were rainbow trout (582 t valued at $4.4
    million), snow/queen crab (25 t valued at $265,020) and herring (9 t
    valued at $28,925).

Nunavut


--  Canada's eleventh largest exporter of fish and seafood, with exports
    valued at $1.6 million.
--  Exported approximately 230 tonnes of fish and seafood.
--  Top exports by value were Greenland halibut (219 t valued at $1.3
    million) and salmonidae species (3 t valued at $46,424).

Northwest Territories


--  Canada's twelfth largest exporter of fish and seafood, with exports
    valued at $312,419.
--  Exported approximately 79 tonnes of fish and seafood.
--  Exports were Greenland halibut (30 t valued at $156,516), shrimp (23 t
    valued at $107,916) and mackerel (25 t valued at $47,987).

Yukon


--  Canada's thirteenth largest exporter of fish and seafood, with exports
    valued at $147,254.
--  Exported approximately 36 tonnes of fish and seafood.
