Horatio Alger Association Honors Dallas Cowboys Owner, President, and General Manager Jerry Jones and Five National Scholarship Recipients from Texas

Mr. Jones and the Scholars are recognized by the Association for their courage, resilience and commitment to higher education

WASHINGTON, March 17, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc., a nonprofit educational organization honoring the achievements of outstanding individuals and encouraging youth to pursue their dreams through higher education, will induct Jerry Jones, owner, president, and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys and a Texas resident as a lifetime Member in April, while also rewarding five deserving Texas students with its prestigious Horatio Alger National Scholarship.  Association Members and Scholars are selected based on their determination to persevere and the success they have achieved despite innumerable adversities.

Named for renowned author Horatio Alger, Jr., who wrote about the merits of hard work, courage and honesty as the means to success, Horatio Alger Association was established in 1947 to uphold these tenets, which are core to the American Dream.  To further its mission, individuals who demonstrate initiative, resilience and excellence in their lives, such as Mr. Jones, are inducted into the Association annually as lifetime Members.

"Mr. Jones' selection by the Association not only honors his outstanding professional achievements, but also the perseverance he has displayed throughout his life," said David Sokol, chairman of Horatio Alger Association.  "He grew up in a small apartment above his family's grocery store, and attended college on a football scholarship.  Through decades of hard work, he fulfilled his lifelong dream of purchasing the Dallas Cowboys.  We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Jones and believe his commitment to philanthropy will help to advance the reach and influence of the Association."

Possessing a strong commitment to philanthropy, Horatio Alger Members are celebrating the 30th anniversary of its scholarship programs in 2014.  The scholarship programs provide educational assistance to at-risk youth with an admirable commitment to continuing their education and serving their communities. Today, the Association administers one of the nation's largest, privately-funded, need-based scholarship programs in North America, having provided more than $100 million in undergraduate, graduate and specialized scholarships since 1984.  The following students from Texas have been recognized for their exceptional accomplishments with the 2014 Horatio Alger National Scholarship in the amount of $21,000:

  • Carlos Alvarez, Victory Early College High School, Houston
  • Kailah Armstrong, Conroe High School, Conroe
  • Pedro Cavazos, Sam Houston High School, Houston
  • Juan Miranda, Robert Vela High School, Edinburg
  • La'Azha Randle, Manvel High School, Pearland

"My fellow Members and I are consistently inspired by the caliber of students that apply for and receive Horatio Alger scholarships," said Tony Novelly, president and CEO of Horatio Alger Association. "Unlike most, these students create opportunities from their disadvantages and adversities. It is our honor to support the Texas Scholars on their journey toward the American Dream and to help lessen the financial strain of a college education for them and their families."

All organizations that did not originate this moment have a pre-existing culture as well as legacy technology and processes that can be more or less amenable to DevOps implementation. That organizational culture is influenced by the personalities and management styles of Executive Management, the wider culture in which the organization is situated, and the personalities of key team members at all levels of the organization. DevOps is often described as a combination of technology and culture. Without both, DevOps isn't complete. However, applying the culture to outdated technology is a recipe for disaster; as response times grow and connections between teams are delayed by technology, the culture will die. A Nutanix Enterprise Cloud has many benefits that provide the needed base for a true DevOps paradigm.

DevOps is being widely accepted (if not fully adopted) as essential in enterprise IT. But as Enterprise DevOps gains maturity, expands scope, and increases velocity, the need for data-driven decisions across teams becomes more acute. DevOps teams in any modern business must wrangle the ‘digital exhaust’ from the delivery toolchain, "pervasive" and "cognitive" computing, APIs and services, mobile devices and applications, the Internet of Things, and now even blockchain.
