Socrata Partners with Ethos to Deliver Government Open Performance Solution in the United Kingdom and Europe

Socrata, a Seattle and London-based, open government, open data, and open performance solutions company, has announced a strategic partnership with UK headquartered, Ethos, the leading provider of “Smart City” solutions. Together, Socrata and Ethos will partner to deliver an open performance solution specifically designed to create measurable outcomes for cities and municipalities in the United Kingdom and throughout Europe.

Powered by Socrata’s Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform, the open performance solution will enable government organizations of all sizes to solve real-world problems associated with most aspects of governance including: transportation, health, energy, citizen services, spending transparency, and more. The solution includes an open data portal, government apps, performance measurement and implementation, and support services – all delivered on Socrata’s secure cloud platform.

Cities and other government organizations using the solution are expected to achieve significant benefits including:

  • Improving the lives of the citizens they serve in ways that go far beyond creating government “transparency,” such as access to better health care, providing information about air quality and recreational services, access to real-time parking information and other “smart-car” services, lower crime through real-time street light monitoring and other open data-sensory technologies, and more.
  • Goal-based governance through performance measurement to increase efficiency and deliver financial and electoral transparency.
  • Lowering the cost of IT spending through a cloud-based, fully online solution that minimizes the need for long-term contracts and professional services engagements.
  • Delivering real-time data to citizens when they need it and in the context by which they can most easily consume it – via apps, maps, and online dashboards, fed by open data.

Socrata CEO and Founder Kevin Merritt sees the massive opportunity of data-driven governing and decision-making in the public sector in the UK and throughout Europe and believes strategic partnerships are the best way to offer Socrata’s open data platform to government organizations globally. Merritt says, “Through our partnership with Ethos, we begin our ambitious global expansion strategy, having achieved significant market adoption for our platform and cloud-based solutions at state and local governments throughout the United States. We believe Ethos and its ‘Smart City’ approach to creating meaningful outcomes for UK cities, councils, boroughs and ministries across the UK perfectly complements Socrata’s mission. Ethos brings the culture, credibility, and local connections Socrata has sought in a UK-based partner. We look forward to partnering with Ethos to increase the impact opening government data in actionable ways can have on government in the UK and beyond.”

Adrian Ulisse, Managing Director, who oversees the Ethos Smart business unit of Ethos Valuable Outcomes, Ltd., says:

“Our partnership with Socrata empowers Ethos to change the way government organizations contract for and consume technology solutions. Gone are the days of long-term contracts, costly and lengthy software implementations, and complex technologies that don’t get used by governments. With Socrata’s open performance solution, we are delivering on the promise of our company’s vision for Smart Cities. We look forward to leveraging the success of Socrata in the U.S. to bring a proven, simple, yet robust, data solutions to our UK public sector clients, in combination with our trusted service. This solution will be a great way for us to expand across Europe and in other markets seeking solutions that can be solved through open data.”

The partnership also directly supports a number of UK government open data initiatives, including the UK Government’s Open Data Strategy1, the Department for Innovation and Skills Industrial Strategy2, and the recent Cabinet Office National Information Infrastructure3 initiative.

One of the key outcomes of the partnership is to increase access to and real-time availability of all open data through common application programming interfaces (APIs) to innovators – such as computer engineers, academics, researchers, and entrepreneurs. With open data more easily and readily available, these “consumers” of open data will be able to accelerate their own goals, projects and business ventures. An increase in open data availability and standard consumption policy and practices means the creation of new approaches, jobs, social services, and new products and services that can be used to solve challenges in cities and other government organizations.

"We are an all-flash array storage provider but our focus has been on VM-aware storage specifically for virtualized applications," stated Dhiraj Sehgal of Tintri in this SYS-CON.tv interview at 19th Cloud Expo, held November 1-3, 2016, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
Choosing the right cloud for your workloads is a balancing act that can cost your organization time, money and aggravation - unless you get it right the first time. Economics, speed, performance, accessibility, administrative needs and security all play a vital role in dictating your approach to the cloud. Without knowing the right questions to ask, you could wind up paying for capacity you'll never need or underestimating the resources required to run your applications.
Web Real-Time Communication APIs have quickly revolutionized what browsers are capable of. In addition to video and audio streams, we can now bi-directionally send arbitrary data over WebRTC's PeerConnection Data Channels. With the advent of Progressive Web Apps and new hardware APIs such as WebBluetooh and WebUSB, we can finally enable users to stitch together the Internet of Things directly from their browsers while communicating privately and securely in a decentralized way.
WebRTC is about the data channel as much as about video and audio conferencing. However, basically all commercial WebRTC applications have been built with a focus on audio and video. The handling of “data” has been limited to text chat and file download – all other data sharing seems to end with screensharing. What is holding back a more intensive use of peer-to-peer data? In her session at @ThingsExpo, Dr Silvia Pfeiffer, WebRTC Applications Team Lead at National ICT Australia, looked at differ...
Adding public cloud resources to an existing application can be a daunting process. The tools that you currently use to manage the software and hardware outside the cloud aren’t always the best tools to efficiently grow into the cloud. All of the major configuration management tools have cloud orchestration plugins that can be leveraged, but there are also cloud-native tools that can dramatically improve the efficiency of managing your application lifecycle. In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, ...

The security needs of IoT environments require a strong, proven approach to maintain security, trust and privacy in their ecosystem. Assurance and protection of device identity, secure data encryption and authentication are the key security challenges organizations are trying to address when integrating IoT devices. This holds true for IoT applications in a wide range of industries, for example, healthcare, consumer devices, and manufacturing. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Lancen LaChance, vic...
With the proliferation of both SQL and NoSQL databases, organizations can now target specific fit-for-purpose database tools for their different application needs regarding scalability, ease of use, ACID support, etc. Platform as a Service offerings make this even easier now, enabling developers to roll out their own database infrastructure in minutes with minimal management overhead. However, this same amount of flexibility also comes with the challenges of picking the right tool, on the right ...
With all the incredible momentum behind the Internet of Things (IoT) industry, it is easy to forget that not a single CEO wakes up and wonders if “my IoT is broken.” What they wonder is if they are making the right decisions to do all they can to increase revenue, decrease costs, and improve customer experience – effectively the same challenges they have always had in growing their business. The exciting thing about the IoT industry is now these decisions can be better, faster, and smarter. Now ...
Security, data privacy, reliability, and regulatory compliance are critical factors when evaluating whether to move business applications from in-house, client-hosted environments to a cloud platform. Quality assurance plays a vital role in ensuring that the appropriate level of risk assessment, verification, and validation takes place to ensure business continuity during the migration to a new cloud platform.
"Splunk basically takes machine data and we make it usable, valuable and accessible for everyone. A critical component of any IoT project is what to do with all the data being generated. This data needs to be captured, processed, structured, and stored in a way to facilitate different kinds of queries. Traditional data warehouse and analytical systems are mature technologies that can be used to handle certain kinds of queries, but they are not always well suited to many problems, particularly when there is a need for real-time insights.
