LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., March 20, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Don't miss IEEE Women in Engineering's (WIE) inaugural International Leadership Conference, kicking off 1 May with an opening reception at Square headquarters in downtown San Francisco that is free to young women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
With a theme of "LEAD BEYOND – Developing Inspirational Women Who Change the World," the IEEE WIE leadership conference is a worldwide forum engaging and connecting women in engineering and technology that is expected to attract more than 300 women professionals. Register now at www.ieee-wie-ilc.org.
"We need to break the stereotype and reverse the balance of women in STEM and, specifically, women in leadership in STEM," said Nita Patel, 2014 IEEE WIE International Chair and Systems and Software Engineering Manager at L-3 Communications. "This conference is an incredible opportunity for women to inspire one another and truly change the world through their leadership."
WIE's International Leadership Conference provides an opportunity for professional women from around the globe to create communities that fuel innovation, facilitate knowledge sharing, and learn through highly interactive sessions designed to foster discussion and collaboration.
The conference features two full days of inspiring presentations from dozens of high-level female senior executives, including:
- Diane Bryant, Senior Vice President at Intel,
- Liz Centoni, Vice President and General Manager at Cisco,
- Jaya Kolhatkar, Vice President of Engineering at Walmart Labs,
- Vanessa Slavich from Square, and
- Seeta Hariharan, Vice President at Tata Consultancy.
Although women make up slightly more than 50 percent of the world's population, women are chronically under-represented in STEM fields (around 11 percent for electrical engineering and 18 percent in computer science). Fewer than 24 percent of senior management globally is female, and even lower in technology companies.
Topics for the two-day event are:
- Inspiration– Top women executives share advice, anecdotes, and career advice on becoming a technical executive, starting your entrepreneurial journey, pursuing an MBA, becoming a thought leader, or building and selling your business.
- Empowerment– Enabling action, leaders will share thoughts on sponsors and mentors, leading in an innovation organization, defining success, developing confidence, and leading forward.
- Enjoyment– Experts will explore work/life balance, helping attendees understand how to take charge of their careers, build meaningful relationships, share personal confessions, and create financial stability.
- Engagement– Through active engagement, leaders will offer instruction on time management, mentoring, staying inspired, and understanding their personal strengths.
The pre-conference reception at Square headquarters is free to all young women interested in learning more about science and engineering, and to women interested in connecting with the next generation of STEM leaders.
The 2014 IEEE Women in Engineering International Leadership Conference is being sponsored by major companies such as Applied Materials, Broadcom, Cisco, Google, Microsoft Research, Northrop Grumman, Oracle, Relyea Chess, Square, TATA Consultancy Services, Texas Instruments, and Walmart Labs, as well as the IEEE Computer Society, IEEE Industrial Applications Society, and IEEE Oceanic Society.

In 2014, the market witnessed a massive migration to the cloud as enterprises finally overcame their fears of the cloud’s viability, security, etc. Over the past 18 months, AWS, Google and Microsoft have waged an ongoing battle through a wave of price cuts and new features. For IT executives, sorting through all the noise to make the best cloud investment decisions has become daunting. Enterprises can and are moving away from a "one size fits all" cloud approach. The new competitive field has ...

Contrary to mainstream media attention, the multiple possibilities of how consumer IoT will transform our everyday lives aren’t the only angle of this headline-gaining trend. There’s a huge opportunity for “industrial IoT” and “Smart Cities” to impact the world in the same capacity – especially during critical situations. For example, a community water dam that needs to release water can leverage embedded critical communications logic to alert the appropriate individuals, on the right device, as...

The Internet of Things is in the early stages of mainstream deployment but it promises to unlock value and rapidly transform how organizations manage, operationalize, and monetize their assets. IoT is a complex structure of hardware, sensors, applications, analytics and devices that need to be able to communicate geographically and across all functions. Once the data is collected from numerous endpoints, the challenge then becomes converting it into actionable insight.

Even though you are running an agile development process, that doesn’t necessarily mean that your performance testing is being conducted in a truly agile way. Saving performance testing for a “final sprint” before release still treats it like a waterfall development step, with all the cost and risk that comes with that. In this post, we will show you how to make load testing happen early and often by putting SLAs on the agile task board.

Manufacturing connected IoT versions of traditional products requires more than multiple deep technology skills. It also requires a shift in mindset, to realize that connected, sensor-enabled “things” act more like services than what we usually think of as products. In his session at @ThingsExpo, David Friedman, CEO and co-founder of Ayla Networks, will discuss how when sensors start generating detailed real-world data about products and how they’re being used, smart manufacturers can use the ...
