Mothering Sunday flowers delivered by FlowerDeliveryExpress.com UAV?

COMMERCE TOWNSHIP, Michigan, March 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Will you get Mothering Sunday flowers via an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) this year? Probably not; however, FlowerDeliveryExpress.com recently conducted the first known flower delivery by drone in the United States for Valentine's Day. Further commercial testing of drones has been grounded in the United States pending a legal case, but testing has paved the way for flowers to be delivered by UAV in the United Kingdom for future Mothering Sundays.

"We're in the business of delivering surprises and conveying emotions – not just delivering flowers," said Wesley Berry, CEO of FlowerDeliveryExpress.com. "Technology is ever-changing, and we're having a lot of fun experimenting with alternative flower delivery methods, such as our successful flowers by drone delivery."

On March 6, a U.S. federal judge ruled to legalize the use of drones for commercial purposes, but the Federal Aviation Administration is appealing the ruling. The case is now pending before the National Transportation and Safety Board.

The answer is no clearer in the United Kingdom, where various governing bodies including the European Aviation Safety Agency and Civil Aviation Authority have worked to determine policies regarding UAVs.

"The good news is that this technology is here to stay," said Berry. "I'm looking forward to using UAVs for flower deliveries, and positioning the company at the forefront of successfully implementing this technology. Soon we'll be delivering flowers by GPS coordinates instead of addresses."

FlowerDeliveryExpress.com launched a consumer beta program to test alternative delivery methods and other development efforts with a select group of U.S. customers before going to market. The company currently uses traditional delivery methods to serve its customers.

In the business of shipping high quality flowers, FlowerDeliveryExpress.com is taking action to stay ahead. "UAVs are an emerging technology that will provide an economically viable shipping option for our customers," said Berry. "We believe the use of UAVs will become common practice in the near future."

This tendency, what some call the “newest shiny object syndrome,” is understandable given that virtually all of us are heavily engaged in technology. But it is also mistaken. Without concrete business cases driving its deployment, IoT, like many other technologies before it, will fade into obscurity.

Everyone talks about continuous integration and continuous delivery but those are just two ends of the pipeline.
