BURLINGTON, VT -- (Marketwired) -- 03/25/14 -- Gardener's Supply Company and Insect Shield® have partnered to help gardeners and outdoor enthusiasts have a great approach to tick prevention and outsmart biting bugs that are hoping to snack on them come spring. Disease-carrying deer (or blacklegged) ticks and mosquitoes, pesky flies and midges (no-see-ums), and even annoying chiggers and ants don't stand a chance against Gardener's new Bug Me Not apparel, items pre-treated with odorless and invisible insect repellent that lasts up to 70 washings.
"Our customers told us that tick prevention and ticks, which carry with them the risk of Lyme disease and other illnesses, are a top concern for them while gardening," said Liz Lawrence, Gardener's Supply merchandising manager. "So together with the experts at Insect Shield®, we created Bug Me Not clothing that's comfortable, stylish and effective at repelling biting bugs, including ticks."
The experts at the University of Rhode Island's TickEncounter Resource Center (www.tickencounter.org) recommend tick-repellent clothing as one key way to avoid tick bites and possible infection with Lyme Disease. These new, gardener-tested clothing items, including the Bug Me Not Shirt and Bug Me Not Convertible Pants, with hidden protective cuffs, allow wearers to stay in the garden longer. Also available is the Buff Bandana with Insect Shield ® technology. Gardeners can work close to the ground, in long grasses and near shrubs without concern about ticks crawling up their pant legs or sleeves.
Each Bug Me Not item was designed with safety, comfort, function and style in mind, with thoughtful details like ventilation panels, zippered security pockets, hidden cuffs and stand-up collars. Super-light 100 percent polyester fabric wicks moisture, dries quickly and even provides sun protection of SPF 30, as well as effective protection from ticks, mosquitoes, ants, flies, chiggers and midges. The built-in insect repellent lasts for about 70 launderings, and no special cleaning methods are required -- just toss into the washer and dryer.
How Does it Work?
The durable protection provided by Insect Shield® apparel and gear is the result of years of research and testing. In July 2003, Insect Shield Repellent Apparel was registered by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Insect Shield clothing and gear products combine the patent-pending Insect Shield process with a proprietary formulation of the insect repellent permethrin -- resulting in effective, odorless insect protection that lasts the expected lifetime of the product. Insect Shield Repellent Apparel feels and smells the same as other clothing.
Can Anyone Wear Bug Me Not Clothing?
Insect Shield® repellent apparel is registered by the EPA, which means it has been rigorously tested on multiple levels. There are no restrictions for use or wear. Bug Me Not clothing comes in women's sizes 4-22W (S-2XL).
Doesn't Winter Weather Kill Ticks?
Though it seems impossible that any insect or arachnid could have survived the frigid temperatures and heavy snows of this past winter, cold-hardy, hungry deer ticks will be at the ready when warmer weather arrives. In fact, estimates from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) indicate there could be about 300,000 new cases of Lyme disease this year -- in addition to other insect-borne illnesses including West Nile virus, La Crosse encephalitis and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Tickencounter.org experts predict a very active tick season for 2014.
What Other Methods Help Prevent Tick Bites?
In the garden or on the trail, ticks are a serious concern. In addition to wearing insect-repellent clothing like the Bug Me Not shirt and pants, daily tick checks, avoiding tick habitats and removing likely tick breeding areas from yards are good practices for tick avoidance. Anyone who finds a tick on their body or clothing should remove it carefully, taking care to remove the entire tick and not to crush it.

I wanted to gather all of my Internet of Things (IOT) blogs into a single blog (that I could later use with my University of San Francisco (USF) Big Data “MBA” course). However as I started to pull these blogs together, I realized that my IOT discussion lacked a vision; it lacked an end point towards which an organization could drive their IOT envisioning, proof of value, app dev, data engineering and data science efforts. And I think that the IOT end point is really quite simple…
