VYCON Delivers First-of-Its-Kind Kinetic Wayside Energy Storage Substation(WESS) at the Los Angeles Metro Red Line Westlake/MacArthur Park Subway Station

$3.6 Million Project Will Showcase How VYCON's REGEN Clean Energy Storage System Recycles Energy -- Saving Electricity Usage for Electrical Rail Systems

LOS ANGELES, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/03/14 -- VYCON, the designer and manufacturer of environmentally friendly, high-speed kinetic energy storage systems, today announced that it has completed delivery of its kinetic energy storage system at the Los Angeles Metro Red Line Westlake/MacArthur Park station. The equipment will be used in Metro's Wayside Energy Storage Substation-WESS Project, which is funded by a grant of $4.4 million provided by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) under the Transit Investments for Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reduction (TIGGER) Program, part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. VYCON's Contract has a value of $ 3.6 million for the supply of the main core equipment and the commissioning of the entire system. The Project will demonstrate how VYCON's green regenerative technology stores energy generated by braking trains and redistributes that energy to rail lines to accelerating trains -- vastly improving energy usage that otherwise would be wasted in the form of heat. With factory delivery completed, on-site commissioning has begun in March and the system will be in operation in Q2.

In addition to energy recycling, VYCON's REGEN also captures the DC train's power and uses it to reduce peak power demands in the system and provide voltage support where low voltages are critical during operation. These peak power and voltage support capabilities are at their greatest during rush hours when the utility power demands are at a premium price.

This installation is the culmination of nearly five years of dedicated labor and preparation for the project known as the Wayside Energy Storage Substation (WESS).

"We are excited to be at this point of installing our REGEN clean energy storage system for this important demonstration project," said Frank DeLattre, president of VYCON. "The heavy energy cycling demands of commuter and light rail present a great opportunity to validate the value that our highly efficient, kinetic energy storage systems can provide. Transit authorities across the globe are looking at solutions on how to capture braking energy from electric powered trains to regenerate power to gain greater energy efficiencies -- resulting in reduced carbon footprint while lowering operating and capital costs."

VYCON has been collaborating with several global transit agencies around the world to install demonstration sites that will provide real-world data for energy and energy savings as well as validating REGEN's ability to eliminate voltage sag issues, that might eliminate the need to install additional Traction Power Substations.

VYCON's environmentally friendly REGEN takes energy storage beyond the limitation of existing technologies through its patented technology. The VYCON system stores kinetic energy in the form of a rotating mass and is designed for high power, short discharge applications. Patented technology used within this system includes a high speed motor/generator, contact-free magnetic bearings used to levitate and sustain the rotor during operation, and a control system that provides system information and performance. These innovative technologies enable the VYCON system to charge and discharge at high rates for hundreds of thousands of cycles making it an ideal energy storage solution for electric rail applications.

The most often asked question post-DevOps introduction is: “How do I get started?” There’s plenty of information on why DevOps is valid and important, but many managers still struggle with simple basics for how to initiate a DevOps program in their business. They struggle with issues related to current organizational inertia, the lack of experience on Continuous Integration/Delivery, understanding where DevOps will affect revenue and budget, etc. In their session at DevOps Summit, JP Morgenthal...
"In the IoT space we are helping customers, mostly enterprises and industry verticals where time-to-value is critical, and we help them with the ability to do faster insights and actions using our platform so they can transform their business operations," explained Venkat Eswara, VP of Marketing at Vitria, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at @ThingsExpo, held June 9-11, 2015, at the Javits Center in New York City.
"We provide a web application framework for building really sophisticated web applications that run on a browser without any installation need so we get used for biotech, defense, and banking applications," noted Charles Kendrick, CTO and Chief Architect at Isomorphic Software, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at @DevOpsSummit (http://DevOpsSummit.SYS-CON.com), held June 9-11, 2015, at the Javits Center in New York
SYS-CON Media announced today that CloudBees, the Jenkins Enterprise company, has launched ad campaigns on SYS-CON's DevOps Journal. CloudBees' campaigns focus on the business value of Continuous Delivery and how it has been recognized as a game changer for IT and is now a top priority for organizations, and the best ways to optimize Jenkins to ensure your continuous integration environment is optimally configured.
DevOps is about increasing efficiency, but nothing is more inefficient than building the same application twice. However, this is a routine occurrence with enterprise applications that need both a rich desktop web interface and strong mobile support. With recent technological advances from Isomorphic Software and others, it is now feasible to create a rich desktop and tuned mobile experience with a single codebase, without compromising performance or usability.
In his session at 16th Cloud Expo, Simone Brunozzi, VP and Chief Technologist of Cloud Services at VMware, reviewed the changes that the cloud computing industry has gone through over the last five years and shared insights into what the next five will bring. He also chronicled the challenges enterprise companies are facing as they move to the public cloud. He delved into the "Hybrid Cloud" space and explained why every CIO should consider ‘hybrid cloud' as part of their future strategy to achie...

DevOps tends to focus on the relationship between Dev and Ops, putting an emphasis on the ops and application infrastructure. But that’s changing with microservices architectures. In her session at DevOps Summit, Lori MacVittie, Evangelist for F5 Networks, will focus on how microservices are changing the underlying architectures needed to scale, secure and deliver applications based on highly distributed (micro) services and why that means an expansion into “the network” for DevOps.
"The idea of polyglot persistence is you have to apply the right database for the job - you always have to have many different databases in play. IT data is typically silo'd by the various tools in place. Unifying all the log, metric and event data in one analytics platform stops finger pointing and provides the end-to-end correlation. Logs, metrics and custom event data can be joined to tell the holistic story of your software and operations. For example, users can correlate code deploys to system performance to application error codes. In his session at DevOps Summit, Michael Demmer, VP of Engineering at Jut, will discuss how this can...
