Non-Profit Helps Record Number of Young Canadians Start Their Own Businesses

Communities across Canada benefit from local business success

TORONTO, CANADA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/03/14 -- The Canadian Youth Business Foundation (CYBF) is pleased to announce that it has helped 800 young entrepreneurs launch new businesses in communities across Canada in the past 12 m onths. This is a record high for CYBF which for 18 years has supported startups with financing, mentoring and other resources, and represents a 37.6 per cent increase over last year.

"We are delighted to have helped fuel the entrepreneurial passions of so many of Canada's young entrepreneurs" said Julia Deans, CEO, CYBF. "We couldn't have supported the success of 800 businesses without the tremendous support of our thousands of dedicated mentors, funders, community partners and corporate supporters, and we thank each and every one of them."

With small businesses representing 98% of all businesses in Canada, the country's future depends on ensuring that the next generation of young entrepreneurs can flourish in ways that benefit all Canadians and the world.

CYBF has helped launch small businesses in a variety of industries. In Winnipeg, Manitoba, Bracor Environmental keeps highways, roads and parking lots ice-free, with an innovative and environmentally friendly, liquid anti-ice alternative to salt. In Charlottetown, PEI, GetGifted helps local merchants to attract new customers, by investing in an innovative marketing approach while establishing their social media presence. In Sherbrooke, Quebec, Immune Biosolutions Inc creates high quality products for biomedical research based on antibodies from bird eggs. In Whistler, BC the Green Moustache feeds local demand for an organic juice and live food bar. In Toronto, Ontario, ThinkDirty smartphone app, informs consumers about potentially toxic ingredients in cosmetics and personal care products, with easy-to-understand product information from an independent resource.

With a robust offering of financing, mentorship, and business planning resources CYBF works with the Government of Canada and other public and private sector funders to support young people in creating viable and successful businesses. Moving forward, CYBF is well positioned to continue on a steady growth trajectory, with a goal to support 975 businesses over the next year.

Companies are harnessing data in ways we once associated with science fiction. Analysts have access to a plethora of visualization and reporting tools, but considering the vast amount of data businesses collect and limitations of CPUs, end users are forced to design their structures and systems with limitations. Until now. As the cloud toolkit to analyze data has evolved, GPUs have stepped in to massively parallel SQL, visualization and machine learning.
Enterprises are adopting Kubernetes to accelerate the development and the delivery of cloud-native applications. However, sharing a Kubernetes cluster between members of the same team can be challenging. And, sharing clusters across multiple teams is even harder. Kubernetes offers several constructs to help implement segmentation and isolation. However, these primitives can be complex to understand and apply. As a result, it’s becoming common for enterprises to end up with several clusters. Thi...
As popularity of the smart home is growing and continues to go mainstream, technological factors play a greater role. The IoT protocol houses the interoperability battery consumption, security, and configuration of a smart home device, and it can be difficult for companies to choose the right kind for their product. For both DIY and professionally installed smart homes, developers need to consider each of these elements for their product to be successful in the market and current smart homes.
Widespread fragmentation is stalling the growth of the IIoT and making it difficult for partners to work together. Microsoft Azure Container Services can be used for container deployment in a variety of ways including support for Orchestrators like Kubernetes, Docker Swarm and Mesos. However, the abstraction for app development that support application self-healing, scaling and so on may not be at the right level. Helm and Draft makes this a lot easier. In this strange new world where more and more power is drawn from business technology, companies are effectively straddling two paths on the road to innovation and transformation into digital enterprises. The first path is the heritage trail – with “legacy” technology forming the background. Here, extant technologies are transformed by core IT teams to provide more API-driven approaches. Legacy systems can restrict companies that are transitioning into digital enterprises. To truly become a lead...
