Seattle Eco-Friendly Hotel Highlights Green Practices For Earth Day 2014

With impressive green practices and award wins, Earth Day is every day at Hyatt at Olive 8

SEATTLE, April 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- While April 22, 2014 is set aside to inspire appreciation for the Earth and bring action towards conserving its resources, Hyatt at Olive 8 participates year round with its dedication to waste reduction and energy consumption. Since opening in February 2009 as downtown Seattle's first and only Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified hotel, the property is continually recognized for its eco-friendly leadership with awards such as the coveted 4 Green Key Eco-Rating and Platinum property by the TripAdvisor GreenLeaders program.

Hyatt at Olive 8 continues to push the industry standard for green accolades and initiatives, and remains dedicated to offering guests world-class service along with environmentally sound practices. Since opening, Hyatt at Olive 8 has:

  • Saved more than 12 million gallons of water with low-flow plumbing fixtures, chemical mechanical water system and more; that amount of water can fill 18 Olympic-sized swimming pools!
  • Used 23 percent less power than non-LEED certified buildings of similar size and scope
  • Saved up to 90 percent with innovative environmental extras like room key-controlled Watt Stopper, Inc. light switches that keep lights on when the room is in use, and off when it is not
  • Used 29 percent less waste water due to dual flush toilets
  • Generated enough energy from the rooftop wind turbines to power three houses for an entire year

"Every day is really Earth Day at Hyatt at Olive 8 given our day-to-day commitment to being a sustainable property, and it's a great opportunity to celebrate our achievements," said Steve Vissotzky, general manager of Hyatt at Olive 8. "We are truly proud to earn the accolades we do, and recognize that more and more travelers value properties that minimize their environmental impact without sacrificing a contemporary and comfortable atmosphere."

Even before construction began on Hyatt at Olive 8, the developer, R.C. Hedreen Company, realized the value of building a green property that was well designed and sophisticated. During building, the property diverted more than 95 percent of construction debris from landfills by redirecting materials to be reused and recycled, utilized sustainable construction materials, installed green fixtures, and set aggressive goals for energy and water savings. Hedreen wanted to expand the hotel's impact beyond downtown, and donated nearly one million dollars toward the preservation of 284 acres on Sugarloaf Mountain in rural King County, as well as vital salmon habitat.
