How Mindfulness Can Reduce Chronic Pain and Depression
Nicholas Wood, Psy.D.
Assistant Professor of Psychology
Chestnut Hill College, Philadelphia
"Mindfulness, or curious, nonjudgmental attention to and awareness of the present moment, can have profound impacts on psychological and physical well-being. Daily practice to build the skill of mindfulness can lead to improved ability to deal with and live with chronic pain, improvements in depression and anxiety, and increased ability to handle the stresses of our lives. As we see gains in these areas, it becomes much easier to do those things we need to do to take care of ourselves. Specifically regarding pain and depression, we find that being able to clearly focus on a specific problem can remove all of the harsh emotions related to the problem. Rather than feeling 'my whole body hurts' or 'I am in such terrible pain,' we learn to realize that 'my knee hurts' or 'the small of my back hurts, which is causing me distress.' Rather than having self-critical thoughts because 'my life is terrible, I will always feel depressed,' we learn that thoughts are not necessarily to be believed -- 'how interesting it is that I am having thoughts that my life will always be bad. I know this is not necessarily true. If I bring my focus back to the present moment or to my breath, I do not have the mental capacity to keep thinking that my life will always be terrible.' It is this simple practice of paying attention to the in breath and the out breath and to the sensations throughout the body that trains our mind to focus, and this focus does not let our mind generate all of the negative emotions that keep us feeling miserable and stuck."

Telltale Signs Your Office is a Health Hazard
Justin Dixon
President
Snyder Environmental
"What are the telltale signs your office is a health hazard? Asbestos and poor indoor air quality (IAQ). The probabilities of asbestos in your workplace is very simple: If the structure was constructed prior to 1990, asbestos-containing materials may be present, although rare in '80s-model construction. Many common building materials and finish materials could possibly contain asbestos, so the only way to know with certainty is to have the building inspected for asbestos by a licensed firm. If leasing space, ask the building manager to view the asbestos inspection for the building, and if they don't have one, urge them to have this done. The inspection report will identify what materials contain asbestos. Company management can then alert employees to the material and its location, and instruct them to monitor the condition and report if the material becomes disturbed or damaged. According to EPA, indoor air is 70 times more polluted than the air outside. Common signs of poor workplace IAQ are water intrusion, odors and, most importantly, consistent or repetitive complaints of employees of respiratory irritation. Examples of poor indoor air would be mold growth, funny smells, and the presence of insects. Indoor air pollution can cause itching, watering eyes, worsened allergies and asthma, headache, nausea, dry throat and skin. If these signs are present, contact an environmental services. The fewer airborne pollutants the cleaner the air." Snyder Environmental, Inc., is a North Little Rock, Ark-based small business that specializes in the safe and compliant remediation of environmental issues such as asbestos, mold, lead paint removal, dust control and demolition for businesses.

The Science of Synthetic Biology
Andre O. Hudson, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Biological Sciences
Rochester Institute of Technology
"Synthetic biology is not a new concept, but advances in genomic techniques make it more facile to do it now. It is an offshoot of biotechnology, which manipulates nature; synthetic biology is creating something new with a DNA tool kit. Synthetic biology artificially makes a biological system do something it normally wouldn't do. A lot of synthetic biology is geared toward making something useful, e.g., a plant genetically engineered to detect mercury in soil turns a specific color when contaminated. Once you can make a new chromosome, it's a big deal, a big step. It has a lot of structural detail to it. Once you have a chromosome, you can add more genetic information."

Innovative Breakthrough for Men With Peyronie's Disease
Dr. Alex Shteynshlyuger
Director of Urology
New York Urology Specialists
"Xiaflex is the first and only FDA-approved, effective treatment for Peyronie's disease short of surgery. It's a great advance in care for men with Peyronie's disease."
Peyronie's disease is a debilitating condition that causes scar in the penis. Peyronie's disease is characterized by abnormal penile curvature or bent. It affects more than 5 percent of men. Until recently, there have been few effective treatment options short of surgery. Most men have suffered in silence with few viable treatment options available. Studies show that most men with Peyronie's suffer from anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and relationship problems that arise as a result of Peyronie's disease. Studies show that sexual partners experience as much distress as do the men themselves. With recent FDA approval of Xiaflex, a naturally occurring enzyme that breaks down the scar in the penis, men have a new option. Xiaflex is the first FDA approved treatment option for men with Peyronie's disease which was shown to work better than placebo control in high-quality randomized controlled trials. Xiaflex is appropriate for men with moderate to severe Peyronie's disease.
Dr. Shteynshlyuger is available to discuss innovative breakthroughs for men with Peyronie's disease. He is a board certified urologic surgeon. He is fellowship trained in Urologic Oncology and Endourology. Dr. Shteynshlyuger has extensive experience of treating complex urological conditions including all stages of prostate cancer, bladder cancer, renal cancer and complicated kidney stones. He embraces multimodal treatments for urological conditions that include medical and surgical treatment, as well as chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiation therapy when necessary. He has published multiple articles on men's health and sexual function in men.

Overall Wellness, Preventative Healthcare to Feel Younger/Live Longer
Michael Roizen, M.D.
Chief Wellness Officer
Cleveland Clinic
"More than 60 percent of folks taking the nutrition test at RealAge.com don't get recommended amounts of vitamins and minerals from their diet (sea salt, for example, doesn't have much iodine). Twice a day, most people should take a half a multivitamin, containing important nutrients at levels close to their recommended daily allowance. It's a great, inexpensive insurance policy against an imperfect diet." Dr. Roizen is the chief wellness officer and chairman of the Wellness Institute at Cleveland Clinic and a past chair of a Food and Drug Administration advisory committee. He has published more than 165 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 100 textbook chapters, 30 editorials, and four medical books (one, a medical best-seller), and received 13 U.S. and many foreign patents. His first general-audience book, "RealAge: Are You as Young as You Can Be?" became a #1 New York Times bestseller and was awarded the Best Wellness Book of 1999 by the Books for a Better Life Awards. He has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Good Morning America, Today, 20/20, and many others. He is a close friend of Dr. Oz and a frequent contributor to The Dr. Oz Show. He is highly qualified to speak to a wide range of medical and wellness topics. He especially enjoys helping people make simple lifestyle and diet changes that allow them to live, feel, look and be years younger, including teaching the role of food and other simple steps to reserve the disease and aging process.

Nutrition for Brain Health and Improved Memory
David Perlmutter, M.D., FACN, ABIHM
Board Certified Neurologist and Fellow
American College of Nutrition
"DHA has become a darling of medical researchers lately because it kick-starts the growth of new neurons in the brain, leading to improved memory. It has also been shown to be a valuable anti-inflammatory, and we all know that inflammation is dangerous to our brains and bodies. If food alone is not providing adequate amounts of DHA, you can look for high-quality fish and plant-based DHA supplements available in most grocery stores and pharmacies."
The cornerstone of Dr. Perlmutter's unique approach to neurological disorders is founded in the principles of preventative medicine. He has brought to the public awareness a rich understanding that challenging brain problems, including Alzheimer's disease, other forms of dementia, depression, and ADHD, may very well be prevented with a gluten-free, low carbohydrate, higher fat diet couple with aerobic exercise. He received his M.D. degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine where her was awarded the Leonard G. Rowntree Research Award for best research by a medical student. After completing residency training in neurology, he entered private practice in Naples, Fla. He is the author of numerous books, including "The Better Brain Book", "Raise a Smarter Child By Kindergarten", and the #1 New York Times Bestseller, "Grain Brain-The Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs and Sugar-Your Brain's Silent Killers." He has been interviewed on many nationally syndicated radio and television programs, including 20/20, Larry King Live, Fox New, Fox and Friends, The Today Show, Oprah, and Dr. Oz.
