In general, viral diagnostic tests can be grouped into three areas, namely, direct detection, indirect examination following virus isolation, and serology. Direct methods generally test for virus particles, virus antigen or viral nucleic acids, while indirect approaches involve culture and isolation. Historically, serology has been the mainstay of activities in the virology laboratory, where antibody titre methods are important.
