Nutrition Bars Are Redefining Fast Food in America

On-The-Go, Health-Conscious People Using Bars As Mobile Meals

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwired - April 07, 2014) - On any given day, 20% of Americans eat a nutrition bar as a snack, or meal replacement. That's 63 million bars -- every day! Hectic lives and busy schedules leave little time for a sit-down meal. Now, bars have become the perfect solution for an on-the-go lifestyle, and a healthier alternative to traditional drive-thru fast food.

However, when opting for a bar in place of fast food, many bars just can't satisfy like a complete meal. A snack? Yes. Dessert? Probably. Light meal? Not quite. While there has been definite innovation in the bar category, sweetness has remained the dominant flavor.

A recent survey confirmed that "sweet" or "high sugar" bars make-up over 90% of the available products on the shelf at an average grocery store. However, an increasing number of bar-lovers seek an alternative to ordinary, sweet bars. In response to this demand, food companies have launched new flavor options like savory, more meal-like bars.

Slow Food for Fast Lives, a rapidly growing company from Northern California, has responded to this demand by launching a unique line of bars featuring vegetables, nuts, grains and spice, inspired by savory global flavors. The founders decided that if more Americans eat bars as a snack or meal replacement, then there should be a bar that has an ingredient deck that reads like a recipe rather than a candy bar wrapper.

"We wanted to make bars with real food and flavors from cuisines that people love like Indian, Moroccan and Thai," says Danny Grossman, one of the founders of Slow Food for Fast Lives. Grossman goes on to add, "Watching folks try them the first time is so much fun. They are expecting just another sweet bar but what they get is real food that satisfies more like a meal."

While Slow Foods for Fast Lives focuses on flavorful bars that appeal to a broad audience of busy, health conscious consumers, other mini-meal bars have specifically targeted consumers, as well. Both Epic and Tanka bars are grass-fed, meat-based bars, popular with the Paleo Diet crowd for their high meat and no grain content. There are also other brands like Simple Squares that aren't new to the market, but were quick to pick-up on the savory trend and now offer herb-based flavors like rosemary and sage alongside their traditional, sweet flavors.

Whether you are an avid bar lover looking to broaden your horizons, or someone who stopped buying bars because they were too sweet, it may be time to take a closer look at the bar set the next time you're shopping and check out some of the new savory flavors.

Slow Food for Fast Lives is based out of San Francisco, California, developed by the founders of Banana Republic, Republic of Tea, and Blue Planet Toys. Slow Food bars are now available at Sprouts from California to Texas, many natural food stores and online. To learn more about their four unique flavors, visit their website at slowfoodforfastlives.com.

The modern software development landscape consists of best practices and tools that allow teams to deliver software in a near-continuous manner. By adopting a culture of automation, measurement and sharing, the time to ship code has been greatly reduced, allowing for shorter release cycles and quicker feedback from customers and users. Still, with all of these tools and methods, how can teams stay on top of what is taking place across their infrastructure and codebase? Hopping between services a...
Virtualization over the past years has become a key strategy for IT to acquire multi-tenancy, increase utilization, develop elasticity and improve security. And virtual machines (VMs) are quickly becoming a main vehicle for developing and deploying applications. The introduction of containers seems to be bringing another and perhaps overlapped solution for achieving the same above-mentioned benefits. Are a container and a virtual machine fundamentally the same or different? And how? Is one techn...
My team embarked on building a data lake for our sales and marketing data to better understand customer journeys. This required building a hybrid data pipeline to connect our cloud CRM with the new Hadoop Data Lake. DevOps is often described as a combination of technology and culture. Without both, DevOps isn't complete. However, applying the culture to outdated technology is a recipe for disaster; as response times grow and connections between teams are delayed by technology, the culture will die.
