Nutrition Bars Are Redefining Fast Food in America

On-The-Go, Health-Conscious People Using Bars As Mobile Meals

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwired - April 07, 2014) - On any given day, 20% of Americans eat a nutrition bar as a snack, or meal replacement. That's 63 million bars -- every day! Hectic lives and busy schedules leave little time for a sit-down meal. Now, bars have become the perfect solution for an on-the-go lifestyle, and a healthier alternative to traditional drive-thru fast food.

A recent survey confirmed that "sweet" or "high sugar" bars make-up over 90% of the available products on the shelf at an average grocery store. However, an increasing number of bar-lovers seek an alternative to ordinary, sweet bars. In response to this demand, food companies have launched new flavor options like savory, more meal-like bars.

While Slow Foods for Fast Lives focuses on flavorful bars that appeal to a broad audience of busy, health conscious consumers, other mini-meal bars have specifically targeted consumers, as well. Both Epic and Tanka bars are grass-fed, meat-based bars, popular with the Paleo Diet crowd for their high meat and no grain content. There are also other brands like Simple Squares that aren't new to the market, but were quick to pick-up on the savory trend and now offer herb-based flavors like rosemary and sage alongside their traditional, sweet flavors.
