FBReader Launches Its eBook Reader with Intertrust’s ExpressPlay Content Protection at the London Book Fair

FBReader, known for its free, multi-platform eBook reader, and Intertrust® Technologies Corporation, a leading provider of trusted computing technologies, announced today the availability of FBReader’s eBook reader with the ExpressPlay™ digital rights management platform that supports the open Marlin DRM standard. The combined solution currently supports Android devices and will soon support iOS, Windows, and Mac OS.

FBReader supports ePub, fb2, mobi, rtf, html, and plain text formats. Users of its reader have access to popular network libraries with large collections of eBooks, and the option to download books for free or for a fee. It also allows users to add their own catalogs and is highly customizable, allowing them to choose colors, fonts, page turning animations, dictionaries, bookmarks, etc., to make reading a convenient and completely customizable experience. FBReader initially targeted the Russian and Eastern European markets but has since expanded into new markets. Today, it has five million active users and nine million downloads.

ExpressPlay is a cloud-based content protection system with an integrated tamper-resistant SDK for eBooks, video, audio, games, and other media. ExpressPlay is based on the open Marlin DRM standard that has been deployed in hundreds of millions of consumer electronics and mobile devices worldwide.

“FBReader is a very popular eBook reader with both users and developers,” said Gilles Boccon-Gibod, Senior Vice President for Technology at Intertrust. “Millions of users have read free books using their software. By integrating ExpressPlay, the FBReader now supports Marlin DRM, and can offer premium eBooks that publishers had not previously made available to them without a robust content protection technology. As a result, FBReader can provide users with an expanded content library.”

“ExpressPlay is a relatively new entrant into the eBook protection market, but it is rapidly becoming the preferred technology,” said Nikolay Pultsin, Founder of FBReader. “It is a good fit for us because it is flexible, delivers superior content protection compared with any other technology on the market, is the most affordable content management technology and has a novel pay-as-you-go pricing model. The combined FBReader-ExpressPlay solution will give our users an enhanced eBook reading experience and access to many more eBooks.”
