UBM Medica US Launches Fourth Edition of Diagnostic Game on Psychiatric Times

NORWALK, Conn., April 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- UBM Medica US today announced that Psychiatric Times, a leading online community and resource for psychiatrists and mental health professionals, will feature a new edition of its popular "Diagnostic Champions' Challenge."

Available via the Psychiatric Times website and mobile web, the "Diagnostic Champions' Challenge" debuted in 2012 to test the clinical knowledge and diagnostic skills of medical professionals. The challenge combines behavior drivers typically found in games, such as the desire to achieve, with educational content to create an effective learning tool that promotes high levels of user engagement.

This new edition of the tournament will guide players through a series of multiple choice questions testing their knowledge of topics related to diagnosing and treating bipolar disorder and will also include other mental health topics. The challenge will include four preliminary rounds, with the top players from each week competing in the final round.

"We are excited to have the 'Diagnostic Champions' Challenge' returning to Psychiatric Times in 2014," said Susan Kweskin, Group Editorial Director, UBM Medica US. "The game was a big hit with our psychiatry audience last year, and we hope this new contest will be just as popular and will increase our psychiatrists' clinical knowledge while they engage in friendly competition."

Features of the "Diagnostic Champions' Challenge" include:

  • Two separate challenge tracks – players who are physicians in the United States play against other MDs; all other US-based healthcare professionals play in a separate track.
  • A new round and new set of questions each week – this feature allows those who may miss a round to stay in the running, and improves players' chances of making it into the final round during the five-week game play.
  • A "save your progress" option –players in-between questions who need to save and come back to the game at a later time are able to do so.

Psychiatric Times has hosted the "Diagnostic Champions' Challenge" three times since its 2012 launch. The competition has also been hosted in specialty areas outside of psychiatry – including oncology, rheumatology, and primary care.

Big Data engines are powering a lot of service businesses right now. Data is collected from users from wearable technologies, web behaviors, purchase behavior as well as several arbitrary data points we’d never think of. The demand for faster and bigger engines to crunch and serve up the data to services is growing exponentially. You see a LOT of correlation between “Cloud” and “Big Data” but on Big Data and “Hybrid,” where hybrid hosting is the sanest approach to the Big Data Infrastructure pro...

I wanted to gather all of my Internet of Things (IOT) blogs into a single blog (that I could later use with my University of San Francisco (USF) Big Data “MBA” course). However as I started to pull these blogs together, I realized that my IOT discussion lacked a vision; it lacked an end point towards which an organization could drive their IOT envisioning, proof of value, app dev, data engineering and data science efforts. And I think that the IOT end point is really quite simple…
A critical component of any IoT project is what to do with all the data being generated. This data needs to be captured, processed, structured, and stored in a way to facilitate different kinds of queries. Traditional data warehouse and analytical systems are mature technologies that can be used to handle certain kinds of queries, but they are not always well suited to many problems, particularly when there is a need for real-time insights.

We're entering the post-smartphone era, where wearable gadgets from watches and fitness bands to glasses and health aids will power the next technological revolution. With mass adoption of wearable devices comes a new data ecosystem that must be protected. Consumers have some idea of the data these devices capture, but most don’t realize how revealing and...
