Valmont Coatings Division Honored With Two Excellence in Galvanizing Awards

OMAHA, Neb., April 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Valmont Industries, Inc. (NYSE: VMI), a leading global provider of engineered products and services for infrastructure, and mechanized irrigation equipment for agriculture, announced today that Valmont's Coatings Division was honored with two Awards for Excellence in Hot Dip Galvanizing.  The Valmont Coatings Division was also awarded the American Galvanizing Association's (AGA) "Most Distinguished" honor for the San Diego Central Library project.

The American Galvanizing Association hosts a yearly competition, Excellence in Hot Dip Galvanizing Awards, to honor the finest achievements in the use of hot dip galvanizing in an ideal, creative, innovative or monumental fashion.

In the Electrical, Utility and Communication Category, Columbia Galvanizing, Valmont's facility in South Carolina, was recognized for its submission of a project that is one of a kind and the world's most capable full scale wind turbine testing facility at Clemson University.  The final unit is almost one million pounds of steel components cantilevered off the embedded ring and its surrounding concrete structure.  And, the final mounting surface was accurate to plane within an incredible 0.028 inches over the entire face.

Gulfstream Park's horse stalls project was recognized by the AGA in the category of "Recreation & Entertainment."  Valmont Coatings' Tampa Galvanizing facility was the galvanizer for a 380 stall facility at its Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, Florida.  The final structure is 600 feet long and 84 feet wide.

AGA's "Most Distinguished" award was shared by two of Valmont Coatings' facilities, Calwest Galvanizing of Long Beach, California and Intermountain Galvanizing of Lindon, Utah.  San Diego's Central Library is located in downtown's East Village with beautiful views across the bay to Coronado Island.  The 497,000-square-foot facility features a truly magnificent exposed galvanized arched domed terrace, and is nine stories tall.  Valmont Coatings is proud and humbled to play such an essential role in providing this new landmark to what has been nicknamed America's Finest City.

"Valmont Coatings is honored to receive these awards," said Rick Cornish, Group President of Valmont Coatings and Tubing.  "The AGA Award criteria are based on the world's most stringent standards for performance and excellence.  The competition was fierce with over 140 submissions for only 14 award categories. We are pleased to be chosen by an independent panel of architects, engineers, designers and users of galvanized steel."
