SANTA BARBARA, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/11/14 -- In April, Wimbledon is returning to India to stage a tournament for young tennis talents. India was host to the first ever Wimbledon event outside of London last fall per the initiative called "The Road to Wimbledon in India", which was organized by the Wimbledon Foundation and the Wimbledon Championships. The goal of the project is to support young tennis players in India. In January of this year, the Wimbledon Foundation in cooperation with the All India Tennis Association organized two tennis events for boys and girls of 14 years and younger in Mumbai and Delhi during which the young tennis players had a chance to qualify for the Junior Masters tournament which will take place in the RK Khanna Centre in Delhi this month. The finalists of the tournament will be welcomed in August to the National Finals held at the original Wimbledon court in London.
While the kids in Delhi are still competing for a ticket to London, this dream already came true for a group of tennis juniors from the United States. The trip was sponsored by the professional games player and devoted philanthropist, Stanley Tomchin, in cooperation with the Marty Hennesy Jr. Tennis foundation as part of the foundation's efforts to support and mentor disadvantaged boys and girls from Las Vegas. Stan was eager to accompany the children on their journey to London to introduce them to the historical All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club where so many of their idols have played and won their tennis matches. One of the most exciting parts of the trip was a lunch with the family of tennis legend Tim Henman, followed by an invitation to watch a game from his VIP box. For many of the kids who have never even left Nevada, this trip was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Back in Las Vegas, the foundation is relentlessly working on making a difference in the everyday life of children in need. Through so-called leadership programs, Stanley Tomchin and the Marty Hennesy foundation do not only introduce children to recreational tennis, but also offer them educational support. The foundation was brought to life eight years ago by a group of Stirling Group members. Today, the far-reaching leadership program counts approximately 40 players and managed to get 90% of kids off the streets, onto tennis courts, classrooms and eventually into college scholarships.
Stanley Tomchin has been a dedicated philanthropist for many years and is especially passionate about helping children to get a better start into their grown-up life and to inspire them to go after their dreams. Aside from considerable donations, he actively participates in many initiatives such as this trip to Wimbledon. Stan's protégés appreciate the opportunities they receive through his projects: "The foundation has already changed my life, now I am going to Europe, I don't even know what to say," said Edgardo Ureta, a student who received a scholarship at Hartford University thanks to the support from the Marty Hennesy foundation. Seeing students like Edgardo succeed motivates Stan to continue his work to make a difference in as many lives as possible.
