Washington, DC Students Make the Finals in Caring for Our Watersheds Competition

WASHINGTON, DC -- (Marketwired) -- 04/12/14 -- Students throughout Washington, DC stepped up to create innovative solutions to improve their local watershed. Out of 13 proposals submitted for the Caring for Our Watersheds competition, sponsored by international agriculture company Agrium, five finalists have been selected from five schools for a chance to win and put their proposals into action:

--  Jefferson Academy
--  LaSalle Backus Education Campus
--  Roots Public Charter School
--  SEED School of DC
--  Washington Latin Public Charter School

"Over the years students have provided viable answers to the question - What can you do to improve your watershed?" explains Lindsey Metheral, Agrium Program Advisor. "Through the Caring for Our Watersheds competition, it is apparent how much future generations care about their local environment, their world and their place in it."

Examples of the finalist projects include educating the community through anti-littering commercials, planting trees to slow storm water runoff from a school parking lot, and developing a smart phone app that highlights the environmental, economic, and health impacts of smoking cigarettes.

"The creativity this contest affords students is beneficial for our environment and the communities we serve," says Kurt Moser, Senior Program Manager at Earth Force. "Anytime we can engage and involve our youth in environmental conversation benefits us all. They are actively seeking ways to make our communities sustainable for future generations and we are here to help them."

The projects will be presented at the 2014 Anacostia Environmental Youth Summit, Friday, May 16, 2014, at Anacostia Park in Washington, DC. Students will compete for cash prizes between $300 and $1,000, with an additional $10,000 to be provided by sponsor Agrium for project implementation. Approximately 400 students from DC Public Schools and DC Public Charter Schools are expected to attend, connecting with other young people and engaging in partner-led environmental activities.
