Have you ever woken from a strange dream, wondering if it had any important meaning?
Dreams are mysterious; scientists still have not figured out how they work and why we have them. Many researchers have concluded dreams are nonsense the brain creates from an assortment of memories and fragmented images while we sleep. However, for thousands of years humans have believed their dreams are insights and omens about the future, the past or their psyches.
Our dreams can be strange and baffling, frightening, enlightening, fascinating and emotional. Many people believe they have some sort of significance. Many people believe dreams are a reflection of unconscious desires and inner conflicts. Others believe the messages and images in dreams are coming through from the "other side."
Dreams have a symbolic "language" and the subconscious brain rarely gives us insight in a straightforward way. Instead, our dreams are filled with meaningful imagery and stimuli we need to interpret to figure out what our subconscious is telling us. For example, a dream you have where you are running as fast as you can to escape danger but you are barely moving, may represent your feeling of being behind with bills and barely making your rent payment every month. The feeling of impending danger is anxiety about your lack of financial security. There have been countless books published on the meaning of dreams and what they symbolise.
Many people have reported having dreams that predicted the future. For example, two weeks before being shot dead, Abraham Lincoln reported having a dream about an assassination. Before Mark Twain's brother was killed in an explosion, he described a dream that included an image of his brother lying in a coffin. Charles Dickens wrote about having a dream about a woman in red who was named Miss Napier. Only a few days later, he was visited by a young woman wearing a red shawl and who introduced herself as "Miss Napier." When the Titanic sunk in 1912, hundreds of people came forward reporting psychic dreams that described the great ship's demise. At least 19 of them were validated, including one with a date-stamped letter.
There are thousands of examples of dreams - such as these - from people all over the world. What do they mean and how do these people glimpse future events? Are they messages from the other side or the product of latent psychic ability?
