Chicago Unveils Best New Restaurants

CHICAGO, April 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The May issue of Chicago magazine features the annual listing of the city's Best New Restaurants, showcasing 17 dining establishments reviewed and recommended by Chicago's dining critics. After hundreds of meals at the most promising new restaurants spanning the entire six-county Chicago metro area, Chicago's critics have narrowed it down to the standouts – only three of which have tablecloths. On newsstands Thursday, the issue also highlights five buzzy establishments opening later this year, five hot spots worth waiting in line for, and four of the best dishes to try today.

On the opposite end of the serious spectrum, and after a year-long investigation of the city's police records, Chicago editors release the first of a two-part series: Special Report: Dead Wrong. The investigation concludes that the dramatically-improved crime rates touted by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and his top cop are not what they seem. The first part of the special report covers homicides, while the second part will delve into all other crimes, including criminal sexual assaults, robberies, aggravated batteries, burglaries, general and motor vehicle thefts and incidents of arson. Part 2 of Dead Wrong will be featured in the June issue of Chicago.

In the Wizard of Odd, Chicago examines the case of the Beanie Babies mastermind, Ty Warner, who recently pled guilty to one of the most cliched crimes of the wealthy: stashing millions in a Swiss bank account and lying about it to the Internal Revenue Service. Instead of the four-plus year prison term recommended by federal guidelines, he was sentenced to two years' probation, 500 hours of community service and a $100,000 fine. Chicago explores how one of the world's wealthiest people successfully dodged the public eye, and why he is escaping jail for tax evasion.
