Stanley Tomchin Gives Another Generous Donation to Greenpeace

SANTA BARBARA, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/22/14 -- Last week Greenpeace blocked the Alma, a ship that carried 2,000 tons of whale meat, from entering the port of Durban. The vessel was on its way from Iceland to Japan to deliver fin whale meat in Tokyo. Plans to stop in Durban to refuel went awry after more than 23,000 South Africans joined Greenpeace and requested port authorities to refuse entrance and service to the Alma. Greenpeace is now prompting the South African government to increase the pressure on other ports along the African shore to turn away the ship once it approaches the coast again. Michael O'brien Onyeka, Executive Director of Greenpeace Africa, commented on this week's events: "Whale meat -- just like rhino horn -- is illegal in South Africa. The shipping company underestimated South African citizens' commitment to abolish the trade of illegal and endangered species and wildlife. Now, the vessel has left South African waters without the possibility to refuel."

The support of the incredibly large number of South Africans brings Greenpeace one step closer to its goal of banning whaling on a global level. Ports in Amsterdam and Germany sided with South Africa and declared that transshipments carrying whale meat would not be welcome anymore. Another success in Greenpeace efforts to protect whales was reported last month when the International Court of Justice ruled that "scientific whaling" was illegal. As a consequence Japan officially cancelled its government-subsidized whaling program in the Southern Ocean. Australia, the country which brought the case before the International Court of Justice, was supported by Greenpeace throughout the process. Greenpeace in return was able to finance the organization's efforts through numerous donations, for example from Las Vegas-based philanthropist, Stanley Tomchin.

Through his charitable organization, The Tomchin Family Charitable Foundation, Stanley Tomchin gave $30,000 to Greenpeace, an amount that was raised to $74,885 through an online donation drive. Greenpeace is a globally active organization that follows the goal of changing the attitudes and behaviors of people around the world in order to foster peace and protect the environment. It also aims high by trying to convince governments to implement rules and regulations to support these goals. In order to maintain integrity and independence, Greenpeace does not accept donations from governments, corporations or political parties. Therefore, the organization has to rely on the support of individuals and private charities, such as Stanley's The Tomchin Family Charitable Foundation, to be able to continue its efforts.

Stanley Tomchin has been gifting substantial contributions to Greenpeace in the past, in particular for research projects in the Bering Sea. Stanley's donations are by no means limited to marine causes though. The professional games player, who grew up in New York, is a dedicated philanthropist who supports numerous local Las Vegas charities and larger organizations. Once a master in the games of chess, bridge, and backgammon, Stanley now uses his skills to support disadvantaged children in the Las Vegas community, especially engaging in the Marty Hennessy Jr. Tennis Foundation's outreach events and programs.
