What began in 1970 in the United States is now a global event – Earth Day is celebrated around the world on April 22. As a longtime Earth Day celebrant (as a kid I’d spend that day cleaning beaches on Lake Michigan), I share the sentiment of renowned naturalist John Muir who said, “When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” It’s all connected. And that’s why I particularly enjoy working at a company that has such a positive impact on the environment.
Last year the DocuSign global network spared 158,410 trees – which translates to about 436 acres of trees covering about ¾ of a square mile. Those trees can now provide precious habitat to animals, reduce CO2 emissions, and help clean our water. By keeping business digital, we also remove the fossil fuels and other resources in the paper supply chain that come with harvesting, transporting and processing those trees. Good, right?
Now eliminate the fax machines, printers, and ink PLUS resources and supply chains that went into making those. And, remove all of the fossil fuel that would have gone into shipping those documents to the various stakeholders and back again (maybe a few times, even).
We’ve really just begun to quantify this, but you can see that the impact of millions of people changing one thing can make a massive, multi-dimensional, and unquestionably positive impact on our planet. So by all means, tell a friend. Or twenty.
The business case for using DocuSign’s Digital Transaction Management (DTM) platform is powerful, and so is the environmental impact. It’s a key pillar of our overall mission and something close to our hearts.
On this special day, I encourage you to support the Earth Day activities in your community and think about other changes you can make that lighten the effects of human consumption on our planet’s fragile ecosystem.
