150 Boy Scouts Descend Upon Ohio Technical College for Welding Merit Badge Training

Ohio Technical College and Lincoln Electric team up with Boy Scouts of America to promote badge and career exploration; providing equipment, facilities and expertise to future leaders

CLEVELAND, April 25, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Ohio Technical College and Lincoln Electric have teamed with the Boy Scouts of America in Northern Ohio to help Scouts earn the Welding Merit Badge. More than 150 Scouts had the opportunity to explore welding related career paths from automotive, collision, restoration, diesel and generator.

As part of this exciting, new partnership, Scouts underwent hands-on welding training at Ohio Technical College's Cleveland Campus, 1374 E 51st Street, Cleveland, on Monday, April 21st and Thursday, April 24th.

"It's a great thing for the OTC welding department to be a part of the Boy Scouts of America Welding Merit Badge," said Mike Wyland, Ohio Technical College's Director of Welding. "It showed the scouts what a great career welding is. I'm also excited we showed how important team work is in anything they do in life. It's a great way to show our younger generation about the future opportunities they have in front of them. The Welding staff is also very excited about the great partnership between The Boy Scouts and Lincoln Electric."

The Boy Scouts created the Welding Merit Badge, which debuted in February 2012, in close collaboration with the American Welding Society and industrial partners. To earn the badge, scouts must learn welding safety requirements, demonstrate first aid procedures that may be needed in the welding environment, demonstrate proficiency in skill sets related to the welding of joints, and learn about careers in various industries that employ welding skills.
