Overture Unveils Two Key Components of Ensemble OSA™ for Service Automation and Network Functions Virtualization at the Metro Service Edge

Overture today announced the availability of its Ensemble Service Orchestrator (ESO) and Ensemble Network Controller (ENC), two key pieces of its open architecture for software-defined services at the metro service edge. Ensemble OSA™ is the industry’s first complete and open platform for service automation and network functions virtualization (NFV) that is built specifically for the service provider metro edge.

"Communication Service Providers (CSPs) and vendors alike are embracing NFV. And, while there have been many vendors announcing their strategies, Overture has already delivered one of the first commercial NFV solutions to market" said Nav Chander, Research Manager, IDC Telecom Networks & Services. “They have a comprehensive working solution, which I have seen. It is impressive and has been well received by a number of Tier 1 service providers."

Leveraging open APIs for deployment into any service provider architecture, Ensemble Service Orchestrator and Ensemble Network Controller may be deployed together as a system or integrated independently.

  • The Ensemble Service Orchestrator is an open, extensible carrier-class NFV service lifecycle management and orchestration system that coordinates virtual resources and physical network elements to create, activate and assure services using one or more virtual network functions. ESO uses the OpenStack™ cloud controller – bundled with ESO – to manage the virtual compute environment, including virtual machines, virtual switches and top-of-rack datacenter switches. For management of the physical wide area network traffic flows, ESO leverages Overture’s Ensemble Network Controller but can also be integrated with other third-party network controllers.
  • The Ensemble Network Controller is a service-aware network controller and management system for the Carrier Ethernet metro service edge. With native support for all Overture network elements, ENC is extensible to support third-party network elements and automates service creation, service activation, device detection, fault management and performance monitoring. By presenting a complete network picture, ENC helps service providers add new services and virtualized network functions without compromising existing network operations.

“Metaswitch have had the opportunity to work with Overture Networks as they were one of the founding members of CloudNFV, which used Project Clearwater as the first virtualized network function to be deployed in their NFV proof of concept” says Martin Taylor, CTO of Metaswitch Networks. “Overture’s Ensemble OSA helps bring to life the original NFV vision of service velocity, on-demand scaling and network agility. We support Overture’s open, multi-vendor approach to NFV management and orchestration as a way of working that’s very much in line with where we think the industry is going.”

Currently operating in a number of field trials and proofs of concept, Ensemble OSA brings together open automation and management of both the physical Carrier Ethernet and virtual infrastructure to help communications service providers introduce new revenue-generating services with agility and speed that have never before been possible.

“The automation and virtualization challenges at the metro service edge differ greatly from those in the data center, which led us to create a true carrier-class orchestration and control solution specifically focused on the part of the network where services are actually delivered,” said Mike Aquino, president and CEO, Overture. “Service providers need to be able to automate and orchestrate the complete service lifecycle across both the virtual and physical metro edge domains. We have been extremely pleased with the response that Ensemble OSA continues to receive from our service provider customers.”

"We're a cybersecurity firm that specializes in engineering security solutions both at the software and hardware level. Security cannot be an after-the-fact afterthought, which is what it's become," stated Richard Blech, Chief Executive Officer at Secure Channels, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at @ThingsExpo, held November 1-3, 2016, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
In this strange new world where more and more power is drawn from business technology, companies are effectively straddling two paths on the road to innovation and transformation into digital enterprises. The first path is the heritage trail – with “legacy” technology forming the background. Here, extant technologies are transformed by core IT teams to provide more API-driven approaches. Legacy systems can restrict companies that are transitioning into digital enterprises. To truly become a lead...
In IT, we sometimes coin terms for things before we know exactly what they are and how they’ll be used. The resulting terms may capture a common set of aspirations and goals – as “cloud” did broadly for on-demand, self-service, and flexible computing. But such a term can also lump together diverse and even competing practices, technologies, and priorities to the point where important distinctions are glossed over and lost.
Video experiences should be unique and exciting! But that doesn’t mean you need to patch all the pieces yourself. Users demand rich and engaging experiences and new ways to connect with you. But creating robust video applications at scale can be complicated, time-consuming and expensive. All clouds are not equal. To succeed in a DevOps context, organizations should plan to develop/deploy apps across a choice of on-premise and public clouds simultaneously depending on the business needs. This is where the concept of the Lean Cloud comes in - resting on the idea that you often need to relocate your app modules over their life cycles for both innovation and operational efficiency in the cloud. In his session at @DevOpsSummit at19th Cloud Expo, Valentin (Val) Bercovici, CTO of Soli...
"Once customers get a year into their IoT deployments, they start to realize that they may have been shortsighted in the ways they built out their deployment and the key thing I see a lot of people looking at is - how can I take equipment data, pull it back in an IoT solution and show it in a dashboard," stated Dave McCarthy, Director of Products at Bsquare Corporation, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at @ThingsExpo, held November 1-3, 2016, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
What happens when the different parts of a vehicle become smarter than the vehicle itself? As we move toward the era of smart everything, hundreds of entities in a vehicle that communicate with each other, the vehicle and external systems create a need for identity orchestration so that all entities work as a conglomerate. Much like an orchestra without a conductor, without the ability to secure, control, and connect the link between a vehicle’s head unit, devices, and systems and to manage the ...
An IoT product’s log files speak volumes about what’s happening with your products in the field, pinpointing current and potential issues, and enabling you to predict failures and save millions of dollars in inventory. The Internet of Things (IoT) promises to simplify and streamline our lives by automating routine tasks that distract us from our goals. This promise is based on the ubiquitous deployment of smart, connected devices that link everything from industrial control systems to automobiles to refrigerators. Unfortunately, comparatively few of the devices currently deployed have been developed with an eye toward security, and as the DDoS attacks of late October 2016 have demonstrated, this oversight can ...
