In its first half 2014 Technology Value Matrix for Corporate Performance Management (CPM), Nucleus Research finds business intelligence (BI) integration driving growth for large vendors while the cloud is enabling smaller vendors with integrated BI and ERP to pursue growth through highly focused CPM solutions. Competing CPM vendors are also continuing to drive growth through simpler deployment options, enhanced mobility, and improvements in overall ease-of-use.
“Even though core CPM solutions are relatively mature, new generations of easy-to-use software with fast and simplified deployment times have re-ignited interest from the mid-market, while giving a boost to established offerings in the enterprise. The availability and flexibility of new cloud-based deployments provide opportunities for emerging vendors to become challengers in the game with cost-appropriate solutions that target specific segments of the market,” said Nina Sandy, principal analyst at Nucleus Research.
There is nothing ‘magic’ about the Nucleus Value Matrix, which categorizes vendors according to usability and functionality. This determines which solutions provide the most value to organizations. Large vendors such as IBM and SAP maintain respectable advantages in the leader quadrant of the matrix, continuing to show innovation through a scalable, cross-enterprise BI and PM environment. Smaller vendors, such as Adaptive Insights, have maintained and are pursuing further leadership positions by providing customers with a more clear definition of their breadth of services and fast scalability without the need for direct IT involvement. Other vendors in the leaders quadrant include Infor, Board, and Oracle.
The Nucleus Matrix additionally finds company CFOs increasingly targeted as decision makers when it comes to new CPM technology investments across the enterprise. As a push in revising strategic management operations have formed, high-level decision making capabilities linked to specific operational performance measures are sought out for their better visibility and improved productivity goals for the user community.

Creating replica copies to tolerate a certain number of failures is easy, but very expensive at cloud-scale. Conventional RAID has lower overhead, but it is limited in the number of failures it can tolerate. And the management is like herding cats (overseeing capacity, rebuilds, migrations, and degraded performance).
