Bowman, the company’s first independent board member, has extensive experience developing, scaling and managing global sales and business development organizations for leading technology companies. “Adding our first independent director is a major step in Couchbase’s growth plan, and Kirk is the ideal person for the job. His big data expertise and proven business acumen in building successful organizations will be a powerful resource for Couchbase as global demand grows for mission critical NoSQL big data solutions,” said Couchbase CEO Bob Wiederhold. “More and more businesses, including Beats Music, eBay and Neiman Marcus, are recognizing Couchbase Server as the most complete NoSQL solution, and Kirk’s insight will help Couchbase further penetrate the enterprise.”
Bowman is considered one of the industry’s foremost authorities on building, scaling and managing enterprise technology organizations, with more than two decades of leadership experience. He has held executive sales and general management roles in both public and private companies around the world, with experience in North America, Asia and Europe.

“Couchbase has enormous potential as businesses around the world adopt NoSQL as a fundamental piece of their big data architectures,” said Bowman. “Savvy enterprises realize that they need a database capable of managing a new category of modern applications built to leverage big data. That database needs to be flexible, scalable and reliable – and Couchbase Server is the best offering on the market today to meet those needs.”
Highly sought after for his expertise, Bowman currently is a member of the board of several other companies including Atlassian, Code 42, Sookasa and Delphix. Contrary to mainstream media attention, the multiple possibilities of how consumer IoT will transform our everyday lives aren’t the only angle of this headline-gaining trend. There’s a huge opportunity for “industrial IoT” and “Smart Cities” to impact the world in the same capacity – especially during critical situations. Too often with compelling new technologies market participants become overly enamored with that attractiveness of the technology and neglect underlying business drivers. This tendency, what some call the “newest shiny object syndrome,” is understandable given that virtually all of us are heavily engaged in technology. But it is also mistaken. Without concrete business cases driving its deployment, IoT, like many other technologies before it, will fade into obscurity.
