Simply Hired today released new data that illuminates key opportunities and job search tactics for new graduates getting ready to enter the workforce. The study finds that the Class of 2014 is greeted by more job opportunities than last year’s graduates – with huge advantages for those with previous work experience. Simply Hired’s data also indicates that new grads may have more job opportunities later in the year and can increase their job odds immediately by being flexible about where they live and work.
“Graduation is an important and exciting milestone as people take the first or next big step in their careers,” said James Beriker, CEO of Simply Hired. “Our data shows there is tremendous opportunity for graduates who are motivated, inspired and ready for anything. Simply Hired is making it easier than ever for new graduates to find and land the job they really want.”
Simply Hired: New Grad Key Findings
More Jobs for New Grads in 2014: According to Simply Hired, approximately 6% of job openings are targeted to new grads in 2014 (up from 5.4% in January 2013). Even better news for new grads: more jobs openings will likely open up later in the year. According to Simply Hired’s data, the number of available jobs for new grads has historically peaked in early Fall with 16% more job openings in September 2013 than in March 2013.
Experience Matters: Experience may be the single biggest factor for new grads when it comes to job opportunities. The number of available jobs skyrockets 70% when looking at jobs with 2 –5 years of experience. New grads should consider augmenting their experience with internships, volunteer work or outside projects.
Most Competitive Cities: Simply Hired’s analysis shows that new grads may want to be flexible about where they live – and even consider moving to a less competitive city for work. The study found that New York (#1) and Los Angeles (#2) lead the list of the most competitive cities for new grads, followed by Houston (#3), San Francisco (#4) and Atlanta (#5). In contrast, the least competitive cities for new grads are Phoenix, Minneapolis, Denver, San Jose and Orlando.
Simply Hired's new graduate data is based on monthly traffic of 30 million unique visitors and millions of job openings across all job industries and categories. Simply Hired defined new graduate jobs by looking at job openings and searches containing the words "new grad" and "entry level".
