ASSIA CEO Dr. John Cioffi to Participate in Marconi Society Webinar on Gigabit Broadband Using DSL and Wi-Fi

Presentation Reveals the Combined Use of Vectored VDSL and Shared Wi-Fi for Practical, Low-Cost Delivery of Gigabit Broadband Speeds to Homes

REDWOOD CITY, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 05/06/14 -- ASSIA, Inc., a leading solutions company for broadband service providers, today announced that ASSIA CEO and Chairman Dr. John Cioffi and MIT Senior Research Scientist Dr. David Clark will present a Marconi Society webinar, "A Gigabit/s to a Billion and High Speeds for Five Billion," on May 8, 2014. Dr. Cioffi and Dr. Clark will discuss using vectored VDSL combined with shared home Wi-Fi to economically and easily enable consumers to benefit from gigabit broadband connections.

Gigabit broadband connections at remarkably reduced cost are now practical through the marriage of DSL and Wi-Fi. In the near future, Germany is planning the roll out for millions of residents of highly reliable 100 megabit speeds using vectored DSL, a technology invented by ASSIA engineers. Millions more are planned in Switzerland, Italy, Belgium and Holland. Telecommunication carriers estimate that DSL is 75 percent cheaper than running fiber all the way to every home and can be delivered in half the time.

Wi-Fi also has passed a gigabit/s connection speed, and some chip providers have recently announced ten gigabit/s 8x8 versions of 802.11ad Wi-Fi connections using MIMO techniques. About Dr. John Cioffi
Dr. John Cioffi is a 35-year veteran of the DSL industry and sports numerous prestigious awards for his contributions to technology and industry. Prior to founding ASSIA in 2003, he served as founder, CTO and vice president of engineering at Amati before its acquisition by Texas Instruments. Dr. Cioffi held a tenured endowed professorship at Stanford University in the Department of Electrical Engineering from 1985 to 2009, where he is now an active Professor Emeritus with limited ongoing research efforts in broadband access. He has published more than 400 papers and holds more than 100 patents. Dr. Cioffi is a member of the United States National Academy of Engineering and an International Fellow of the United Kingdom Royal Society of Engineering. He is a winner of the Economist Computing and Telecommunications Award (2010), the IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal (2010), the IEEE Kobayashi Award (2001), and the Marconi Society's Marconi Prize (2006). He currently serves on the board of Alto Beam and on the Marconi Society Board of Trustees. Dr. Cioffi holds a BSEE from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University.

About Dr. David Clark
David Clark is a senior research scientist at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, where he has worked since receiving his PhD there in 1973. He joined the Internet project in the mid-1970's, and implemented the Internet protocols for the Multics system, the Xerox PARC ALTO, and the IBM PC. From 1981-1989 he acted as chief protocol architect for the Internet, and chaired the Internet Activities Board. During the 1990's he worked on mechanisms to support QoS on the Internet. He has also studied issues of Internet performance and security. His current research looks at re-definition of the architectural underpinnings of the Internet, and the relation of technology and architecture to economic, societal and policy considerations. He is helping the U.S. National Science Foundation with its Future Internet Architecture program. He is past chairman of the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board of the National Academies, and has contributed to a number of studies on the societal and policy impact of computer communications. He is a fellow of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
