Voxbone Empowers Enterprises and Communications Providers to Reap the Benefits of WebRTC Without Network Investment

Voxbone today announced the availability of its Web Real-Time Communications (WebRTC) service, allowing enterprises and communications providers to use Voxbone’s global private VoIP network for WebRTC calling. Voxbone aims to accelerate adoption of WebRTC by enabling companies with SIP-based VoIP infrastructure to quickly and easily deploy high-quality and secure WebRTC services without complex software development or network investment.

With its new service, Voxbone introduces two capabilities which remove key barriers to the deployment of WebRTC services: Firstly, Voxbone routes WebRTC calls over its private global backbone instead of the public Internet, adding high levels of quality of service and security. Secondly, calls are delivered over a regular SIP trunk, allowing Voxbone customers to start using WebRTC without the need for additional investment in network infrastructure. Additionally, Voxbone will make its WebRTC JavaScript library available to its customers, enabling rapid web client development. This allows enterprises and communications providers to quickly, easily and cost-effectively roll out high-quality and secure WebRTC services.

Large enterprises and communications providers require technology to be mature before starting a complex deployment project, and consider quality of service a key requirement. As with many emerging technologies, WebRTC has challenges in this respect. WebRTC calls traveling over the public Internet are subject to variable quality of service, making them less suitable for enterprise communications. Additionally, as WebRTC standards are evolving rapidly, investing in this technology inherently brings the risk that they will be outdated by the time the infrastructure gets deployed.

Voxbone’s new WebRTC service allows its customers to overcome these challenges by using the proven technology of its private VoIP network, which has a track record of delivering a high quality of service. As WebRTC calls are delivered over a SIP trunk, companies can leverage existing SIP-based VoIP infrastructure without having to worry about changes in WebRTC standards. This allows them to take immediate advantage of the benefits associated with using WebRTC in web clients, including:

  • Saving on telecommunications costs by moving inbound communications from PSTN to the Internet
  • Improving the quality and user experience of web-based calling applications such as click-to call or click-to join applications

Ten of Voxbone’s existing cloud conferencing and contact center customers will be participating in a private beta trial, with general availability expected in Q4 2014.
