How are hybrid clouds evolving to allow the coexistence of private and public clouds? What are the challenges to meeting a true hybrid cloud scenario?
Businesses large and small have been at times both seduced and confused by the grand promise of the cloud. But when they talk about "hybrid cloud," they are really just seeking the flexibility to utilize the cloud as an extension of their own data center. They also want levels of openness, transparency and ease of use - previously unattained in the enterprise - where production workloads can be easily mobilized, centrally managed and protected.
Companies considering hybrid cloud - moving applications to the public cloud - are finding that the journey is complex. What are the challenges? To accomplish this movement, production workloads need to be easily mobilized, centrally managed and protected to interoperate with, and reap the benefits of, the public cloud. But production workloads today are not easily mobilized - they're "silo-ed."
Workloads are silo-ed by the hypervisor, be it VMware ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V, Citrix Xen or Redhat KVM. Workloads simply cannot move between these hypervisors easily. They are also silo-ed by hardware, with "vendor lock-in" to a specific brand of hardware making it difficult to move workloads for applications like disaster recovery and data migration. Workloads are also silo-ed in clouds. Cloud providers often use proprietary infrastructure and tools, making them incompatible with other clouds.
So where can enterprises turn?
The hybrid cloud is interesting to IT departments and CIOs worldwide because it allows for cost reduction, bursting, server migrations, disaster recovery, and data portability. Gartner estimates that 70 percent of enterprises will pursue the hybrid cloud by 2015. Unlike the public cloud model, hybrid cloud diverts far more control to the IT department, allowing for greater flexibility and easier manageability of workloads. But how does a hybrid-cloud-based datacenter avoid or remove the datacenter silos?
For the hybrid cloud to reach widespread adoption and remove these silos, we need to see the development and adoption of an underlying infrastructure layer that allows for seamless flexibility of data and applications across clouds, hypervisors, networks and hardware - a cloud fabric of sorts that would enable portability of data across any environment.
