KINGSTON, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 05/10/14 -- The Raise the Rates Campaign is excited to announce Ellen Clifford from Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC) UK will be speaking in Kingston on Monday evening as part of a province-wide tour.
Who is DPAC: Disabled People Against Cuts is a British campaign at the forefront of challenging the Cameron government's brutal cuts to programs for unemployed and disabled people. The British government's changes include a system called the Work Capability Assessment, which has been used to deny benefits to thousands of people. DPAC has mobilized disabled people in the United Kingdom to fight back and has formed alliances with community organizations and unions to resist the culture of austerity that is behind the changes. Atos, the company carrying out assessments of sick and disabled people for the government was forced to quit because of resistance from DPAC and their allies.
Ellen Clifford from DPAC's National Steering Committee will be in Kingston on Monday, May 12. She is on a province-wide tour that includes Sudbury, Ottawa, Toronto and Kitchener. Clifford is also a member of Unite the Union and works to build solidarity between workers in unions and those forced to live on social benefits.
