Percona Powers High Availability MySQL(R) in the Cloud With OpenStack(R) Linux Distributions

Percona Software Now Included in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Distribution; Percona XtraDB Cluster Certified for the Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform

DURHAM, NC -- (Marketwired) -- 05/12/14 -- Percona, the company that makes MySQL faster and more reliable, today announced that Percona XtraDB Cluster, Percona Toolkit for MySQL, and Percona XtraBackup are now included in the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Long Term Support) release of the Linux operating system. In addition, Percona XtraDB Cluster is now certified for the Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform (RHEL OSP). Ubuntu and Red Hat are two of the most widely used Linux distributions, and the inclusion and certification assure users that they can implement their MySQL strategies on these platforms using Percona software. Percona software is currently included or certified for 65 percent of the OpenStack distributions with Ubuntu and RHEL OSP, according to the November 2013 OpenStack User Survey conducted by the OpenStack User Committee and Foundation.

Percona Included in Ubuntu
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, which runs on all major public cloud services, creates a common platform that enables ISVs, SaaS providers and end users the freedom to choose the cloud provider that best meets their needs. Percona XtraDB Cluster 5.5, Percona Toolkit, and Percona XtraBackup, are now included in the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS distribution available from the Ubuntu website.

According to the OpenStack survey, Ubuntu is the most popular host operating system for OpenStack with 55 percent of deployments. With the inclusion of Percona XtraDB Cluster in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and the availability of the Percona XtraDB Cluster Juju Charm for Active/Active MySQL, constructing a High Availability deployment of OpenStack is easier than ever. With Juju, Percona XtraDB Cluster can be deployed as a drop-in replacement for the MySQL charm in an Ubuntu 14.04 OpenStack deployment.

Percona Included in Debian
Percona Toolkit and Percona XtraBackup are also in the current testing release (Jessie) of Debian, the free operating system from which Ubuntu is derived.

Percona XtraDB Cluster Certification on Red Hat
Red Hat Certification of Percona XtraDB Cluster 5.6 for the Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform ensures that Percona XtraDB Cluster has been tested and certified for use with any Red Hat offering that includes OpenStack, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform (RHEL OSP). Solutions that have achieved Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Certification, or which are certified for other products in Red Hat's open hybrid cloud portfolio, are available in the Red Hat Marketplace.

Percona XtraDB Cluster, an open source high availability clustering solution for MySQL, is far less expensive and easier to deploy than MySQL Cluster and much more functional than MySQL replication. Percona XtraDB Cluster integrates Percona Server, Galera, and Percona XtraBackup into a single, easy-to-deploy, and cost-effective solution. It was downloaded nearly 100,000 times in 2013, more than doubling the number of downloads in 2012. Because it is based on Percona Server, a drop-in replacement for MySQL, Percona XtraDB Cluster is an easy upgrade for current users of MySQL, Percona Server, and MariaDB.

Percona Toolkit for MySQL is a collection of advanced command-line tools for a variety of MySQL server and system tasks, including verifying MySQL replication integrity by checking master and replica data consistency, efficiently archiving rows, finding duplicate indexes, summarizing MySQL servers, analyzing queries from logs and tcpdump, and collecting vital system information when problems occur. More than 4,000 tests and several years of deployment at some of the Internet's best-known sites have proven the reliability of the tools in Percona Toolkit for MySQL, which is derived from Maatkit and Aspersa, two of the most popular MySQL management software utility toolkits for MySQL server administration.

Percona XtraBackup is a free open source solution for MySQL hot backups for InnoDB and XtraDB databases. Percona XtraBackup enables fast and reliable backups, transaction processing during backups, automatic backup verification, and increased uptime due to faster restore time. Percona XtraBackup makes MySQL hot backups for all versions of Percona Server, MySQL, and MariaDB®. It also performs streaming, compressed, and incremental backups to a MySQL backup database.

Peter Zaitsev, Founder and CEO of Percona, Inc.
"Inclusion in Ubuntu and certification for Red Hat send clear signals to the MySQL and OpenStack communities that we are committed to creating an excellent user experience for Percona software on their platform of choice, enabling them to create the environment they need to meet customer demand and successfully grow their businesses. The demand for deploying MySQL in high-availability environments is ramping up both for on-premise as well as in the cloud using technologies such as OpenStack so we are especially excited to have Percona XtraDB Cluster now available with Ubuntu LTS and the Red Hat OpenStack Platform, both widely used, enterprise-grade Linux distributions."

Mark Baker, Ubuntu Server Product Manager, Canonical
"The inclusion of Percona software in Ubuntu 14.04 is another critical step in making it easier for our customers to adopt cloud-first strategies. As they ramp up their use of Ubuntu as the basis for running large, mission-critical applications in hosted environments, many will look to Percona XtraDB Cluster and Percona XtraBackup to drive the performance and reliability of their MySQL databases and OpenStack deployments, ensuring optimal value from their infrastructure."

The IoT market is on track to hit $7.1 trillion in 2020. The reality is that only a handful of companies are ready for this massive demand. There are a lot of barriers, paint points, traps, and hidden roadblocks. How can we deal with these issues and challenges? The paradigm has changed. Old-style ad-hoc trial-and-error ways will certainly lead you to the dead end. What is mandatory is an overarching and adaptive approach to effectively handle the rapid changes and exponential growth.
IT data is typically silo'd by the various tools in place. Unifying all the log, metric and event data in one analytics platform stops finger pointing and provides the end-to-end correlation. Logs, metrics and custom event data can be joined to tell the holistic story of your software and operations. For example, users can correlate code deploys to system performance to application error codes.

These use cases rely on ubiquitous connectivity and generate massive amounts of data at scale. These technologies enable new business opportunities, ways to optimize and automate, al...
