Gazzang, the big data and cloud security experts, today announced the industry’s first commercially supported data encryption and key management solutions for OpenStack Swift, the open source cloud project’s popular object storage platform. Gazzang solutions are on display this week at the OpenStack Summit at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, booth E23.
Object stores like Swift are commonly used to hold unstructured data including images, videos, documents and web content, and are ideal for serving large volumes of content to many concurrent users. Organizations running OpenStack clouds often store sensitive business information on Swift, making data encryption essential.
With Gazzang zNcrypt™ for Swift, users don’t need to worry about securing the data within each unique OpenStack instance. Gazzang encrypts the entire Swift object store at the underlying storage layer, so data is never stored in plaintext. And because the encryption is transparent to the application, performance impact is low and application changes are unnecessary.
Gazzang encryption keys are isolated from the Swift data and secured by Gazzang zTrustee™ a software-based and policy controlled key manager. The encryption and key management solutions help OpenStack users meet security initiatives around compliance and prevents unauthorized users and processes from accessing sensitive data.
“Swift supports native client-side encryption, but today, Gazzang is enabling organizations to encrypt everything transparently at the virtualization level,” said Eddie Garcia, vice president of Information Security and Services at Gazzang. “This means OpenStack users can more quickly and easily spin up instances that meet internal and external security requirements without having to spend a lot of time on application and configuration changes.”
Gazzang provides data security solutions and expertise to help enterprises protect sensitive information and maintain performance in big data and cloud environments. Our technology enables SaaS vendors, health care organizations, financial institutions, public sector agencies and more to meet regulatory compliance initiatives, secure personally identifiable information and prevent unauthorized access to sensitive data and systems. The company is headquartered in Austin, Texas and backed by Austin Ventures and Silver Creek Ventures. For more information, visit www.gazzang.com.

Choosing the right cloud for your workloads is a balancing act that can cost your organization time, money and aggravation - unless you get it right the first time. Economics, speed, performance, accessibility, administrative needs and security all play a vital role in dictating your approach to the cloud. Without knowing the right questions to ask, you could wind up paying for capacity you'll never need or underestimating the resources required to run your applications.
