Government of Canada Awards Contract For New Coast Guard Helicopters

Contract awarded to Bell Helicopter of Mirabel, Quebec to supply 15 helicopters as part of Coast Guard's Fleet Renewal Program

MIRABEL, QUEBEC -- (Marketwired) -- 05/12/14 -- The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, and the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs, today announced a contract of up to $172 million awarded to Bell Helicopter for the procurement and delivery of 15 light-lift helicopters within the context of the Canadian Coast Guard's Fleet Renewal Plan. This contract will stimulate economic growth and create Canadian jobs and business opportunities in the Canadian aerospace industry.

Coast Guard helicopters support activities such as ice reconnaissance, maintenance and construction of aids to navigation and telecommunications equipment, personnel and cargo transfer between ship and shore, and they provide support to science and fisheries enforcement.

Under the contract, the first of 15 Bell model 429 helicopters is scheduled to be delivered in May 2015, with one helicopter expected to be delivered each month thereafter. The procurement of these modern aircraft and associated goods and services required with new helicopter acquisitions will help renew the capabilities of the Coast Guard's existing fleet of helicopters. The purchase of 15 Bell 429s will support more than 200 direct and indirect jobs.

Now that the world has connected “things,” we need to build these devices as truly intelligent in order to create instantaneous and precise results. This means you have to do as much of the processing at the point of entry as you can: at the edge. The killer use cases for IoT are becoming manifest through AI engines on edge devices. An autonomous car has this dual edge/cloud analytics model, producing precise, real-time results. In his session at @ThingsExpo, John Crupi, Vice President and Eng...
There are 66 million network cameras capturing terabytes of data. How did factories in Japan improve physical security at the facilities and improve employee productivity? Edge Computing reduces possible kilobytes of data collected per second to only a few kilobytes of data transmitted to the public cloud every day. Data is aggregated and analyzed close to sensors so only intelligent results need to be transmitted to the cloud. Non-essential data is recycled to optimize storage.

Microservices are a very exciting architectural approach that many organizations are looking to as a way to accelerate innovation.
