NEC Corporation of America (NEC), a leading provider and integrator of advanced IT, networking and communications solutions, today announced new enhancements to its HYDRAstor OpenStorage Suite for Symantec NetBackup by adding Deduped Transfer source side deduplication and WAN-optimized Auto Image Replication (AIR) for disaster recovery (DR).
The Deduped Transfer feature maximizes backup performance and reduces network bandwidth consumption by pre-processing data streams on the media server to send only unique blocks of data to HYDRAstor. This new feature increases maximum performance of each Hybrid Node by 6x (to more than 40 TB/hr) and maximum system performance by 4x (up to 4.1 PB/hr or 1.1 TB/sec for current-generation HS8-4000 storage system with 165 nodes).
The OpenStorage AIR functionality facilitates automatic DR at remote sites for Symantec NetBackup environments, leveraging HYDRAstor’s RepliGrid WAN-optimized replication technology to send only unique compressed chunks of data to the remote site. OpenStorage AIR replicates critical backups from the primary site to the DR site, with each copy in a different NetBackup domain maintained by an independent NetBackup catalog. The media server at the DR site automatically imports the replicated images and updates its catalog, enabling fast recovery if the primary site is completely lost.
"The PBBA and archive markets continue to exhibit double digit growth rates and require advanced functionality for efficient and scalable capacity optimization for enterprise environments," said Laura DuBois, program vice president, Storage, IDC. "NEC’s HYDRAstor storage system has established itself as an excellent solution for backup and archive workloads, with a scale-out object store architecture that supports modular scalability, high performance, and integrated functionality for enterprise customers."
Deduped Transfer is also available for the previous generation of HYDRAstor nodes: with more than 5x performance improvement up to 19.8 TB/hr per Accelerator Node and maximum system performance by 3x up to 1.1 PB/hr for third-generation HS8-3000 storage systems with 165 nodes.
“With the new Deduped Transfer and Auto Image Replication enhancements, HYDRAstor customers can reduce bandwidth requirements and significantly improve backup process speed and efficiency,” said Gideon Senderov, director of Advanced Storage, NEC Corporation of America. “We will continue to respond to our customers’ needs and maximize the value HYDRAstor solutions deliver to enterprise environments by further pushing the envelope on efficiency and performance and extending HYDRAstor’s lead as the top performance Purpose-Built Backup Appliance (PBBA) solution available in the market today.”
The new Deduped Transfer and Auto Image Replication features are separately licensed features. Deduped Transfer list price will be $30,000 per HS8-4000 Hybrid Node, and Auto Image Replication list price will be $12,000 per HS8-4000 Hybrid Node. Both features will be generally available along with the HYDRAstor 4.2 software release in June 2014.

Automation is enabling enterprises to design, deploy, and manage more complex, hybrid cloud environments. Yet the people who manage these environments must be trained in and understanding these environments better than ever before. A new era of analytics and cognitive computing is adding intelligence, but also more complexity, to these cloud environments. How smart is your cloud? How smart should it be? In this power panel at 20th Cloud Expo, moderated by Conference Chair Roger Strukhoff, pane...

With billions of sensors deployed worldwide, the amount of machine-generated data will soon exceed what our networks can handle. But consumers and businesses will expect seamless experiences and real-time responsiveness. What does this mean for IoT devices and the infrastructure that supports them? More of the data will need to be handled at - or closer to - the devices themselves.

Building a cross-cloud operational model can be a daunting task. Per-cloud silos are not the answer, but neither is a fully generic abstraction plane that strips out capabilities unique to a particular provider. In his session at 20th Cloud Expo, Chris Wolf, VP & Chief Technology Officer, Global Field & Industry at VMware, will discuss how successful organizations approach cloud operations and management, with insights into where operations should be centralized and when it’s best to decentraliz...

In recent years, containers have taken the world by storm. Companies of all sizes and industries have realized the massive benefits of containers, such as unprecedented mobility, higher hardware utilization, and increased flexibility and agility; however, many containers today are non-persistent. Containers without persistence miss out on many benefits, and in many cases simply pass the responsibility of persistence onto other infrastructure, adding additional complexity.

DevOps is often described as a combination of technology and culture. Without both, DevOps isn't complete. However, applying the culture to outdated technology is a recipe for disaster; as response times grow and connections between teams are delayed by technology, the culture will die. A Nutanix Enterprise Cloud has many benefits that provide the needed base for a true DevOps paradigm.

Back in February of 2017, Andrew Clay Schafer of Pivotal tweeted the following: “seriously tho, the whole software industry is stuck on deployment when we desperately need architecture and telemetry.” Intrigue in a 140 characters. For me, I hear Andrew saying, “we’re jumping to step 5 before we’ve successfully completed steps 1-4.”

All organizations that did not originate this moment have a pre-existing culture as well as legacy technology and processes that can be more or less amenable to DevOps implementation. That organizational culture is influenced by the personalities and management styles of Executive Management, the wider culture in which the organization is situated, and the personalities of key team members at all levels of the organization. This culture and entrenched interests usually throw a wrench in the work...
