The Governor General to Visit Nova Scotia

OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 05/12/14 -- His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will be in Nova Scotia on May 14 and 15, 2014.

The Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada will first stop at Canadian Forces Base Greenwood to take part in the presentation and consecration of a new Standard. He will address Canadian Armed Forces members on this occasion.

His Excellency will attend the launch of the Community Foundation of Nova Scotia's Smart & Caring Community Fund. He will be showing his support for the fund by visiting not-for-profit organizations in the communities of Mahone Bay, Gold River and Chester. His Excellency will also present the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award to people from across the province.

In Halifax, the Governor General will join young people aged 15 to 30 to discuss youth engagement at a round-table discussion hosted by United Way Halifax. Finally, he will receive an honorary degree at the University of King's College's 225th Encaenia ceremony and deliver the convocation address to the assembled graduates and other honorary degree recipients.

Presentation of Colours to 405 Squadron                                     
The Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada will preside over the 
presentation and consecration of a new Standard to 405 Long Range Patrol    
Squadron. His Excellency will conduct the inspection of the guard of honour 
and deliver an address on this occasion.                                    
                                                                            
Formed in 1941, 405 Eagle Squadron was the Royal Canadian Air Force's first 
bomber Squadron. Today, the Squadron's primary responsibilities remain those
of intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and control of Canada's       
eastern approaches.

Launch of the Lunenburg County Smart & Caring Community Fund                
As patron of Community Foundations of Canada, His Excellency will attend the
launch of the Lunenburg County Smart & Caring Community Fund, which will    
support initiatives focused on sustaining and improving the quality of life 
in the region. On this occasion, the Governor General will deliver a speech 
and present the Caring Canadian Award to deserving volunteers from Nova     
Scotia. The names of the recipients and their citations will be available   
online (www.gg.ca) at a later date.                                         
                                                                            
Leading up to 2017, community foundations from all across Canada are        
answering the Governor General's call to service and connecting the country 
by establishing Smart & Caring Community Funds. The funds will give         
communities the flexibility they need to take advantage of local            
opportunities, and to help make them the smart and caring places they can   
become.

Visit to an After-School Program for Mi'kmaw Children                       
The Governor General will join Acadia First Nation Chief Deborah Robinson,  
student support worker and Native artist Ms. Sheila Porter, and Mi'kmaq     
children between the ages of 6 to 11 during their after-school activities.  
His Excellency will receive a talking stick from the children.              
                                                                            
The after-school program that Ms. Porter delivers with her husband Duane    
includes assistance with reading, writing and arithmetic, along with        
information about Native history and traditions. Acadia First Nation is a   
Mi'kmaw Nation with ties to traditional territory. It encompasses five      
reserves: Yarmouth, Ponhook, Medway, Wildcat and Gold River. For more

His Excellency will visit The Herb Garden and The Bark Barn at Bonny Lea    
Farm which offers various services and activities that assist people with   
disabilities. He will meet with participants and support workers for both

In 1973, a group of interested men and women developed a vision to assist   
young people with disabilities by providing them with opportunities to learn
the skills they needed to lead meaningful and productive lives in their     
communities. Their vision involved teaching, advocacy and challenging       
conventions, leading to the incorporation of the South Shore Community

Governor General's Round-Table Discussion on Youth Engagement               
His Excellency will participate in a round-table discussion on youth        
engagement hosted by United Way Halifax. He will join in conversations with 
young people aged 15 to 30 who are actively involved in their communities to

Over the past year, the Governor General has hosted round-table discussions 
on youth engagement all across the country. The latest editions have        
followed the launch of My Giving Moment, a national multimedia campaign     
designed to encourage Canadians to think about what they have to give and   
then to act on those opportunities. The campaign, inspired by His           
Excellency, is part of an ongoing effort to promote giving among Canadians

The University of King's College's 225th Encaenia Ceremony                  
The Governor General will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Civil Law from   
the university and deliver the convocation address as part of the 225th     
Encaenia ceremony to be held at King's College. His Excellency will receive 
the honorary degree for his services to education and universities, and to  
Canada. The ceremony will be live streamed on the University of King's

Programme, interdisciplinary upper-year programmes in Contemporary Studies,
