LONDON, ENGLAND -- (Marketwired) -- 05/13/14 -- Few in the upper ranks of finance enjoy quite the same unsullied reputation as Christine Lagarde.
Unusually for a person of her stature, the IMF chief is seen by most as squeaky clean and free of scandal - especially when compared alongside her predecessor Dominique Strauss-Kahn. However, on closer look it would appear that Lagarde is not as saintly as previously assumed.
In a new World Finance special report, Jules Gray looks back over Lagarde's career, up until her accession to the throne in 2011, at which time she was named the first lady of finance and appointed Managing Director of the IMF. Lauded throughout her career in finance as a capable leader, Lagarde was one of the few finance ministers to come through the financial crisis with their reputations intact.
The World Finance report, however, shows that her past is not as trouble-free as many suspect. "Scandals dating back to her time as French Finance Minister were revealed that put her previous dealings under the spotlight and led to suspicions that she had done political favours for a particularly dubious character," writes Gray.
